I received such great feedback on my last post that I decided to write another one highlighting another product I believe is fundamental to achieving a flawless ( or darn close to one) complexion. I introduce to you , the world of serums.
What is a serum?
A Serum can be applied to your skin after cleansing but before moisturizing. Serums are made up of smaller molecules so a well formulated serum delivers loads of powerful active ingredients directly into your skin. They literally have one job and that’s to penetrate into the outer layer of your skin to deliver these active ingredients. I like to think of a serums like boosters for your skin. Yes, of course you can do without one and you’ll be fine, but after knowing the benefits of using a serum, why would you skip it? It literally elevates your skincare regime to supreme status!
On my lunch break from my 9-5, I decided to take a stroll to the mall next to me which so happens to have a Sephora. Lucky me! Not so lucky for my husband 🙁
He always asks me what I did on my lunch break because it’s either 2 things:
Went to the Mall
Went to the Gym
He would like to hear ” went to the gym” more often but off to the mall I go!
You see, Sephora truly puts me in a euphoric state and I’m not ashamed to say that it is my happy place. I know I’m not the only one!
As I walked around Sephora, I stopped in front of the Huda Beauty cosmetics stand and was instantly drawn to her Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette collections. The collection consists of 11 palettes with 9 shades which are a mix of mattes and shimmers. The tones range from warm brown, mauve, smokey, and electric! They are all gorgeous and I wanted them all, but at $35 for a mini palette, I had to control my inner diva and I settled on Coral Obsessions.
I was instantly drawn to the burnt orange ,vibrant yellow and dusty pink shades. This palette is screaming SUMMER! I quickly added the mini palette to my shopping tote and went on my way.
I was so excited to get home and try on these gorgeous colours!
Amazing shades right!
Coral Obsessions Palette Look:
So, what did I think of the final look you ask ?
I am somewhat happy with the final results of the eyeshadow application.
Truthfully, I really really wanted to love this palette. I wanted to love it so much, I was going to budget for another 2-3 palettes because the shade ranges are absolutely amazing! The idea of mixing burnt orange and deep red together sounded so good in my head.
But then reality hit me…hard!
The matte shadows are very powdery, chalky and a nightmare to blend out. There was so much fall out. I was constantly dusting away the fallen shadow. The shimmery shades were better to blend but not great. I had difficulty picking up product onto my blending brush. I must have dipped the brush into each shade a good 2-3 times before I saw enough product on my brush to apply.
Did I get a defective palette?Hoping I did.
I read a few other reviews online and I think the mass opinions on the obsession palettes is in favour of them, but there are some makeup gurus on youtube who are experiencing the same issues as I am.
So here’s my final verdict on this palette:
I fell in love with the the shades , they are stunning. It’s miniture size make is so convenient for travel and Huda Beauty herself picked out every single shade in each palette. That’s pretty cool I think!
But dear Huda, $35 for a palette that you may get 3-4 uses out of it ( if that) before hitting pan due to crazy fallout is not cool ! Not cool at all . The matte shades are too chalky and the pigmentation is barely there when blending out. Even my UD shadow primer wasn’t able to save me.
But since my mamma didn’t raise a quitter and I’m always up for a challenge, I’ll give it one more try! I’ll probably pick up another palette, maybe from the smokey range, to compare the two.
If you have used any of the Obsessions Collection palettes, I would love to hear from you. Do we share the same experience? Do you like it or hate it?
I hate leaving 2017 on a negative note, but honestly guys I had to share my experiences with you on these hyped up products I regret buying in 2017! Usually, I don’t follow the masses but with some of these products I was really curious so I took the plunge and bought them and regret quickly sank in. Usually if I don’t like a product I have no problem returning the item BUT sometimes I get a bit too lazy to make it back to the store or it’s an online purchase and I don’t want to waste more money returning it, so I end up blogging about my experience! Win -Win I say!
I’ve discussed Pixi Beauty on my blog before , but I wanted to dedicate another post to them because #1 I love their products and #2 they are against animal testing, and I’m trying to make a conscious effort to feature more brands in this category! I have highlighted a few of their products that I’m currently using and loving in this post.
The Geltint & Silkgloss set were sent to me as a PR sample by Pixi ( #thankful). I threw one of them in my gym bag, the other in my work bag and the other is on my desk in my office, you know in case I want to freshen’ up at some time during one of my late night blogging sessions!
One side of the stick is the Tint and the other side is the Gloss. The tint is so subtle and adds a nice dose of color to your lips. , I found the tint somewhat hydrating but not too much. The gloss adds more hydration and compliments the tint. The gloss is not sticky and fragrance free. As both products deliver a light dose of colour to the lips, they are totally buildable and can be worn during the day or night if you prefer for a polished look.
Peel & polish is also another PR sample from Pixi. This enzyme peel can be used 2-3 times a week to help you reveal smoother more radiant looking skin. It will polish away all dry skin cells and impurities that have built up on your skin. The peel is made with natural fruit enzymes that help exfoliate the skin in a very gentle manner.
I think the one product most people are curious about when I bring up Pixi is the glow tonic. For those who haven’t tried it yet ( not sure what your waiting for), it’s a glycolic acid toner that exfoliates and purifies the skin for a more radiant complexion. I use it every other night before I apply my night moisturizer, but it’s safe to use everyday. Love this stuff!
Pixi collaborated with 4 amazing beauty and lifestyle influencers. First up is their collaboration with influencer Maryam Maquillage. She’s such a doll and I always admired her so when the two teamed up I was so excited to see what the collaboration would be. Of course it’s the very popular Glow & Bronze palette. The highlighters are very wearable and more on the natural side which I adore! It’s very versatile and used it everyday this past Summer to add a sun kissed glow to my face.
Pixi also has a collaboration with influencer Aspynovard. Together they created a set of highlighters and blush .I own Rome Rose blush. It’s the perfect peachy shimmery blush that I also wore the majority of the Summer. It really gives a natural flushed look to your skin. As much as I layered the blush I never felt it was overdone and blends beautifully on the skin.
The last product I own is from influencer Judy from ” It’s Judy Time”. Together these powerhouses came up with not one but two crazy popular palettes ; Get The Look : ITSEYETIME and ITSLIPTIME. One is an eye shadow palette and the other is a lip palette, obviously! I have not had the chance to try the lip palette yet but I have used the eye shadow palette many times! The palette has 12 shades, mostly neutral , some shimmery but the majority are matte. I love that they included a mix of shimmery and matte shades. It makes the palette so versatile and worth spending the dollar bills on !! Right? I can’t ever see myself buying a palette with just shimmery shades or matte shades. It has to give a wide range of possibilities so you can come up with various looks using only one palette. The ITSEYETIME definitely delivers in that department. The shadows themselves are smooth almost buttery and blend really well. My favourite shade is Honey Bear. I use it as a transition shade and sometimes I just wear it all over my lid for a more “laid back I but still got my stuff together look”
Here I used ITSEYETIME palette to create this look. I used Honey Bear and Bubbly to create a very wearable everyday look. It literally took me 2 minutes to apply the shadows. I saturated my brush with Honey Bear + Bubbly and one quick sweep over my eyelids was all it took. I decided to be a bit more dramatic, but still wearable , and swiped the colours on the bottom as well. I also used the Rome Rose blush to accentuate my cheekbones and cheeks. I freaking love this blush, pardon my language , but it’s so darn nice. It looks like I have a nice flush to my face with just the right amount of colour. Very wearable and low maintenance for this mom of 3!
The KKW x KYLIE collab was my first order placed with Kylie Cosmetics.
When I first saw the promotional photos for the liquid lipsticks I completely fell in love with them. I love neutral lips and I was instantly smitten by these shades so I , and most of the neutral loving ladies around the world, waited in anticipation for the April 25 release and tried our luck! I was ecstatic that on my first attempt I actually made it through the queue and got my hands on these beauties.
After 2.5 weeks of waiting, the package finally arrived and I tore it open as quickly as I possibly could. My first impression was that the packaging was just gorgeous. The blush / pastel pink collection box felt a bit velvety and sturdy which actually surprised me. The KKW logo was simple but made a statement on the package. A note of thanks accompanies every package from Mrs. West herself and hints at another event or launch coming soon!
The collection contains 4 neutral ( partially pinky) crème liquid lipsticks all named after Kim’s nicknames. Cute!
KIMBERLY, KIM, KIKI, KIMMIE
KKW x KYLIE COSMETICS
Here’s the breakdown of each shade (left to right):
KIMBERLY : True nude and the most nude in the collection.
KIM: This is a peachy nude.
KIKI: This is a pinky nude.
KIMMIE: This is a rosy nude.
I first applied Kimberly as I gravitated towards this shade first, being the most nude out of the collection I knew I would get some good wear out of it. Off the bat it applied very streaky and I had to dip two to three times to get the desired effect I wanted on my lips. The shade itself is gorgeous but after 2 swipes each, bottom and lower lip, I felt the product was moving around too much, probably because I had too much product on my lips. I detest this slippery feeling and that’s probably why I stick to matte lipstick, but without doubling the layer it looked like gloss and not lipstick.
Next up was Kim. I have olive skin tone and can wear peachy colours well. All the beauty magazines tell me peach is great for olive skin but unfortunately the KIM peachy nude was a no go! It was a ‘blah’ peach. Again, I had to double dip to get a good amount of coverage and colour on my lips. Still after 2 coats it looked like gloss with no real colour saturation, even for a nude lipstick there has be some hint of colour.
On I went to try on KIKI.
I didn’t even try to double coat this shade. This colour did not suit me at all. Fair enough, not all shades will look good against my skin tone. I get it.
KIMMIE was next and I decided to switch things up a bit. I grabbed MAC Boldly Bare liner and filled in my lips before applying KIMMIE. I think a base is good when you’re applying sheer or liquid lipsticks. KIMMIE looked OK on me, definitely better than KIKI did. Again , I still had to double dip to get enough product on my lips and it still applied streaky and didn’t last long on my lips even with a base.
Worth the Hype ?
Overall I would say I am not a fan of this new crème formula and I prefer a matte, semi-matte or Satin formula. These lipsticks are more of a gloss with a hint of colour rather than a lipstick. The product moves around too much and applies so streaky. This formula is non hydrating, even though I watched some very well known youtubers swear it was soo hydrating…*insert eye roll*. It isn’t a long lasting formula but with a base such as a lipliner you can get 1-2 hours wear. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind reapplying lipstick as long as it feels good on my lips but unfortunately because I had to double the product on the top and lower lip these did not feel good on and is quite wasteful. The shades, excluding, Kimberly, have a pink and peachy undertone rather than the brown undertone that I like to see in a nude shade. If you are a pink, rose or peachy nude lover than these may be good for you if you don’t mind the lackluster formula.
What did I like about the KKW x KYLIE collab?
The packaging is classic and pretty! The lipsticks aren’t sticky at all and felt lightweight and also do not have a scent to them. They have a nice texture as long as you don’t overload your lips with product as the product will become slippery on your lips and move around .
I’m actually super disappointed in my purchase you guys! I was looking forward to having the most amazing experience with these lipsticks but sadly that’s not going to happen. I will use them as I paid a lot of money for them since the exchange rate to CDN funds was so bad at the time. In case you haven’t figured it out , I will not be repurchasing this collection again, but that’s not to say I won’t order any other KYLIE Cosmetics products. We will have to see what this savvy entrepreneur comes up with next !
Here are a few budget friendly satin lipsticks that I’m definitely thinking of ordering next:
I finally had to chance to grab the highly hyped up Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance eyeshadow palette. This palette is comprised of 14 shadows with mostly matte and a few metallic shades in neutral and berry tones. You have a mix of vibrant red, pinks, oranges and browns. The variety is just fabulous! The palette itself is vanity display worthy!. It’s a pink/lilac velvet compact that looks very regal and has the Anastasia Beverley Hills logo in the middle. The shadows are .02 oz each and were produced in a cruelty free environment. The palette also comes with a well constructed dual ended brush. Bonus!
top row: Tempera (matte), Golden Ochre(matte), Vermeer(metallic), Buon Fresco (matte), Antique Bronze(metallic), Love Letter(matte), Cyprus Umber(matte) bottom row: Raw Sienna(matte), Burnt Orange(matte), Primavera (metallic), Red Ochre (matte), Venetian Red(matte), Warm Taupe(matte) , Realgar(matte)
I ‘ve ben wearing this palette now for over 2 weeks straight and my favourite combo at the moment is Antique Bronze + Love Letter + Venetian Red + Warm Taupe. I didn’t think I would be a fan of the berry tones but I’ve been converted! How great is it to have neutral matte shades( taupes and browns) in the same palette as matte oranges and reds! This palette is feminine and romantic but most importantly wearable! Because they’re matte shades you can layer them on until you find the intensity and combo of colours you’re comfortable wearing. You can apply these shadows with a light hand for day /work wear or heavy handed for a night out. The shadows themselves applied very well with little to no fall out. They went on smoothly and layered well. Out of the 14 shades my absolute favourite is Red Ochre! I love applying it on the outer crease to add a bit of drama to my daytime look! Gives me just enough “pop” for day wear! Tip: You can spray MAC Fix + on your brush and dip into any shade to make it more vibrant if you wish.
Overall I’m really impressed with this palette. I was hesitant at first because I wasn’t in love with my very first Anastasia palette that I purchased awhile back. I felt it had crazy fallout and poor pigmentation of the shadows, however, I feel this brand has come a long way with their eyeshadows since my last ABH shadow purchase and they are becoming a force to be reckoned with if they continue to be innovative with colours and combos in their palettes. Amazing palette ABH!
Worth the Hype? Yes it is beauty lovers! If you’re shopping around for a palette with a variety of warm bold and neutral shades, go ahead and give this one a try. DISCLAMIER: I was not compensated for this post. I bought the palette with my own money. The opinions expressed are my own.
I first heard about the True Match Lumi Cushion from my favourite youtube guru, Jaclyn Hill. I don’t usually watch Youtube videos as I don’t have the time , however, on my downtime I enjoy watching her spunky videos. She talked about how much she loved the Lumi Cushion and how it’s actually replaced one of her high end foundations. Of course, I had to try it out for myself!
The Lumi Cushion packaging is rose gold and super glamorous. You know how I love me some good packaging! I have it displayed on my glass vanity and it adds that pop of glam! For a drugstore foundation I found the $20 price tag a bit steep for the .51 oz product, but I bought it anyway.Lumi Cushion comes in 8 shades. I had a hard time finding the perfect match for my skin tone. I ended up buying Perfect Beige which wasn’t my exact colour but was the closest to my skin tone.
The foundation comes with it’s own “puff” for easy application. I wasn’t too crazy about it at first sight but it’s probably the only tool that will work with this foundation. I tried to use my beauty blender but I felt it absorbed too much of the product. I used my real technique stippling brush but the application looked patchy. I reverted back to the “puff” as it made more sense.I used dabbing motions to apply the foundation. I don’t recommend you swipe the foundation onto your skin as you will see the strip of foundation along your face. The foundation is very buildable. I applied one coat of foundation and loved the dewy finish it gave. I could have stopped there but I decided to add another coat of foundation. Two coats of Lumi Cushion foundation and you are a glowing dewy goddess! I love it! I didn’t feel it left my skin shiny in a way that looked greasy. It added a nice glow to my skin. At first, I didn’t add any setting powder but after a half hour of wear I decided it was best to set the foundation. Even after applying the Laura Mercier setting powder I still noticed my skin had a glow to it. You don’t have to use any setting powder, but I decided it was best because I was going out in the freezing cold 🙂
My final thoughts on the True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation: I still find the $20 price tag a bit high for the .51 oz product. I’m not too thrilled that the best way to apply the foundation is using the “puff” it comes with for sanitary reasons( how do you wash it after a few uses?). The best way to apply the product is by using the “puff” as well as dabbing motions. I hope L’Oreal comes out with more shade ranges. With all that to say, I will be repurchasing the True Match Lumi Cushion foundation as I’ve been wearing it everyday since purchase and have received so many compliments on how luminous my skin looks. Even in the dead of winter, I was able to achieve a glowy complexion from a foundation! L’Oreal, thank you for such a great product 🙂
