There are so many foundations to choose from. How do YOU choose the perfect foundation? You know, that foundation that doesn’t settle into the fine lines or dries out your skin a few hours after applying it! Well for me, in my twenties ,it was easy. I wore anything I wanted to, if I wanted to. In my thirties I struggled a bit as I started to see my skin dry out more.Well hello 40’s! I seem to be holding steady at just the drying out of the skin. Still no deep wrinkles or saggy skin…thank god for them good genes!
When we beautiful woman hit our 3o’s our skin starts to lose collagen fast and all those years in the sun slowly start to creep up on us. That doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy time in the sun, it just means we need to be aware of the damage it may cause to our skin. I digress, this post is not about sun protection, it’s about finding the best foundation for anyone over 30! Even if your not in your 30’s this is still a very good read!
Here are my suggestions on what you need to look for in a really good foundation now that you’re no longer in your 20’s!
Choose a lightweight formula. You can still achieve good coverage with a lighter formula such as Georgio Armani Luminous Silk or L’Oreal True Match foundation. Both have buildable coverage, and won’t dehydrate your skin or sit in those fine lines.
Foundations that contain Hyaluronic acid instantly plump and hydrate your skin! Charlotte Tilbury “Magic Foundation” and Lancome “Skin Feels Good” are both loaded with good ingredients to give your skin extra moisture and that lifted effect.
Serum infused Foundations are so impressive. Their multitaskers as they are infused with face oils and powerful antioxidants to help fight away free radicals all while covering up your minor imperfections . My favourite serum infused foundation is the Estée Lauder “Double Wear Makeup”.
Seek out a foundation that contains more natural ,yet active, ingredients such as white tea and thyme extracts. Arbonne makes a beautiful foundation that literally melts onto your skin
My top foundations that I have on rotation ALL THE TIME are:
In this photo I’m wearing the Kat Von D ” True Portrait Foundation” and I just love how it looks on my skin and is definitly a new favourite of mine. Super hydrating, lightweight formula with a semi-matte finish that lasted all day on my skin! It applied as a liquid but then dried to a powder finish. I added some blush, highlighter, lipstick, eyeliner and I was good to go for the day! My skin has a new BFF!
Remember, age is just a number we see on our drivers licence and nothing more!
Don’t believe me ? Google JLo, Queen Rania and Ms. Janet Jackson! All woman that have aged with grace and style!
As we bid farewell to 2017 I wanted to leave you guys with some of my favourite #musthave products that :
#1 I used up completely and repurchased in 2017;
#2 I loved so much I tried not to use them up too quickly (failed miserably) and;
#3 they will most likely continue to be my #musthaves in 2018!
If you click on the product names below you will be redirected to the blog post that I dedicated to these products so you can gain an appreciation as to why I selected them as my 2017 #musthave products!
I’m always curious about what products other women carry around in their makeup bags so I thought I would share with you what I currently have in mine.
It seems that every month my makeup bag gets fuller and fuller with little treasures I find in the form of lipsticks, liners, foundation and mascara wands ! My bag travels everywhere with me !!I ‘ve been known to apply my makeup on the go like on the metro, in a cab and recently in my classroom! I’m a busy girl so when I need to freshen up I make sure I have all my essentials with me.
What do you wear when you want to feel like confident, beautiful and flat-out sexy ? That LBD tucked away in your closet or a kick ass pair of stilettos? For me, it’s definitely a bold lip! Nothing exudes confidence , boldness and passion more than a perfect red lip. Anytime I think of a red lip,Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe are the images that come to my mind. They definitely exuded sensuality and were never caught without a perfect pout. Read more
So it’ s no surprise that I’ve been lazy on the blog lately. Life has changed slightly for me. I’m back at school and adjusting to adult-student life. School during the week days and taking care of a family + side hustle is a bit stressful…Thank the good lord for chocolate and coffee! I seem to be fine after shoving handfuls of dark chocolate in my mouth 🙂
I’ve missed blogging oh so much though! It really is my favourite hobby and when I’m blogging I feel less stressed and a bit free if that makes any sense. It’s my little domain of creativity and I love it!
So back to it…
I did a little drugstore shopping last weekend to pick up 1 thing (baby shampoo) and I ended up walking out with MANY things and forgot the baby shampoo (typical Maha) !
I had never tried any of these products before, so here’s what I think about them.
L’Oreal Paris “Caress Wet” Shine Lip Stain in Iinfinite Fuchsia
Infinite Fuchsia looks very bold in the applicator but ones applied it’s a very subtle colour! This product has a small applicator that is contoured for easy application on the lips. This is very handy and I wish all the glosses, stains had the same applicator. The stain once applied to the lips is very pigmented and almost feels silk-like on the lips. It doesn’t give you a “Wet” look even though this is the marketing angle for this product. It lasted about 3-4 hours on my lips before I had to reapply which I think is pretty good for a non-matte stain. For $6, it was a good purchase and I would buy it again but maybe in a more neutral colour.
L’Oreal Paris Extraordinaire in Plum Adagio
This is a hybrid of lipstick + stain + balm! At least for me that’s what it felt like. I loved wearing “Extraordinaire” and I’m so surprised I hadn’t picked it up sooner. I chose Plum Adagio to wear this season and it really is a beautiful rich fall colour. It’s very reminiscent of MAC Hang up, which I lurvvv!! “Extraordinaire” also comes with an amazing short applicator for ease of use. The product is thick once applied so you don’t need a lot of product to achieve a good colour or pigmentation. This formula, I found, was much glossier than “Caress Wet”. “Extraordinaire” will also hydrate your lips tremendously and last around 4-5 hours before you have to reapply. The colour looks very rich and plump on the lips.A great product all around! I will be investing in other shades soon.
This product is from a company called Know Cosmetics and I heard about it on a few beauty blogs that I read so during my drugstore shopping frenzy I picked up! It’s a colourless lip liner that is used to prevent lipsticks, lip stains and gloss from bleeding and feathering! I used it only once and it worked well! I was wearing brown script and it didn’t bleed or feather out. This product did exactly what is was supposed to do. The true test will be when I wear a bold red lip come x-mas time. Then and only then I’ll be able to see if it truly is as fantastic as the reviews online say it is! Will keep you updated on this product, but so far it works well.
Last week was my first time using the Fit Me concealer from Maybelline. I think I’m the last beauty blogger on earth to try out this concealer. I had been using L’Oreal true match as well as Nars Creamy concealer before that. Both are great concealers but I wanted to try something different. I found the Fit Me concealer to be just as creamy as Nars but not as great at hiding my dark circles completely I was a bit disappointed because I had high hopes for this one but then quickly remembered that I know how to colour correct for under eye darkness! Duh ! This is where my next drugstore item came in handy, but first I’ll finish off with this concealer. I found it to be a good product to conceal average dark circles from a few restless nights sleep, however, I don’t consider it to be a heavy duty concealer(on it’s own!). A negative point about this concealer is that I had only used it 3 times and already ran out of the product. To me this indicates 2 things: 1) there isn’t enough product in the tube(.25 oz) and 2) I used way to much product to conceal my dark circles so it probably wasn’t the best concealer for me.
It’s no surprise that I love NYX cosmetics and in Canada you can buy this brand at the local drugstore. I picked up the NYX Dark Circle concealer as it had a salmon /peach tint to it and I instantly knew it would be great to use as a corrector. This product is actually a concealer and not a true corrector, but products can be manipulated and used in other ways. So I use this concealer to first colour correct my under eyes and then I apply the Maybelline Fit me concealer. BAM! Match made in heaven 🙂 You can also use any other concealer you like, but I was testing out the Fit Me concealer for this post. The NYX concealer is very very creamy and almost melts onto your skin as you apply it. I have never used this concealer on it’s own as a true concealer so I don’t know how well it covers. If you decide to use this concealer as a corrector, only apply it to the areas under your eyes that need the colour correcting.
Side Note: Confused about colour correcting ? I have a post coming up that will explain it all!
I picked up this lipstick in the clearance bin and that should have been a clear indication on the quality of this product. I was not impressed with this lipstick at all! The colour should be close to a true brown and it was not at all. It didn’t glide on like a lipstick, more like a dollar store gloss. The colour didn’t last more than an hour and I felt it looked muddy on my lips. All that to say, I was not happy with this product at all. As I was typing out this post I was searching on the NYX site for a link to add and I noticed that they changed the packaging of this product and now it’s called Turnt UP! Lipstick and not High Voltage. I’m not sure if this means they also changed the formula, regardless, it’s not good! I would not buy it again.
L’Oréal refers to this foundation as a liquid powder. Hmm…. it’s clearly a liquid so I was intrigued and added it to my cart. I applied this foundation with a wet beauty blender and then I realized why it’s called liquid powder. It really does feel and look like a powder once applied on the skin. I instantly fell in love with this hybrid foundation and have worn it to school everyday! It’s supposed to mimic a no makeup look which is does effortlessly. This is a true lightweight foundation that gives the skin a natural satin finish (so not matte and not dewy). It won’t cover redness or imperfections very well as it is a very light. It lasts about 7 hours before it starts to separate slightly. If you are seeking out a natural inexpensive foundation, I would highly recommend you try this product out. This isn’t a new product to the L’Oréal line up but it was knew to my makeup bag 🙂
essence gel eyeliner
I’ve used many essence products, some I’ve loved and some I would never buy again. The gel eyeliner is definitely a product I would buy again. It reminds me of Maybelline gel eyeliner but $5 cheaper. It almost can be compared to MAC fluid line if it dried a bit darker. The essence gel liner is very smooth/creamy and can easily be picked up by a MAC 208 brush , which is what I use to create a winged liner. The cost and the longevity of the liner is great. You may feel you have to go over the wing a second time just to deepen the colour but other than that it’s a real winner!
I’d love to know what new drugstore products you’ve tried and recommend?
Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post. I paid for these products with my own money and I have no been compensated for this post.
I put myself on a self inflicted ” no makeup buy” for 2 weeks. It’s been a struggle and I had to rely heavily on will power but I survived! Now that the ban has been lifted I’m back online creating my wish list. What can I say? I’m a true beauty junkie! So many of these products have been on my radar for awhile and I can’t wait to try them out. With Summer coming I know I’ll be putting these products to good use! As well, be on the lookout for new product reviews on the blog !
// Kiehl’s Tumeric and Cranberry brightening masque //
Spring is almost here – so some changes are in order! Not just your wardrobe needs an overhaul but so do your skin, makeup and hair. Let’s start by swapping our winter coats and boots for a light spring jacket and rain boots(ankle boots as well!).I’ve compiled for you an easy 3 step guide that will take you from feeling damp and dreary to feeling beautiful, refreshed and ready for Spring! PREP SKIN
Your skin is your biggest organ(yes it’s an organ, look it up!) and should be taken care of just as you do your heart. We all know good skin is highly sought after. It all starts within. It’s been proven that a well hydrated body emits a natural glow that rivals the best highlighter on the market. For your body to be well hydrated you need to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water. By consuming water you are flushing toxins out of your system and allowing your glow to come thru. It’s not magic, it’s science!
At times, drinking 6-8 glasses of water isn’t enough or practical so you need the help of exfoliating products.A cleansing power tool helps to rapidly exfoliate the body to reduce dry patches and leaves skin feeling very smooth. Cleansing your skin is so important first thing in the morning as well as at night to ensure all the products and environmental toxins are removed from your pores. Choose a cleaner that is right for your skin type. Using a reliable water based toner after cleansing helps to ensure your skin is receiving a healthy dose of antioxidants for the day. Weekly exfoliating of the skin is necessary! Since many of us can’t make it to the aesthetician on a weekly basis, it’s great to rely on a solid BHA exfoliating product that improves skins texture, appearance and gets rid of blackheads. As well a decent BHA product will help with collagen production. A serum loaded with antioxidants will help to firm, brighten and hydrate your skin all day. If dryness around the eyes during allergy season is a factor then adding an eye cream to your Spring prep routine will definitely help. An effective eye cream will hydrate the under eye and reduce puffiness. There is no excuse for leaving the house without sunscreen. Sunscreen is the #1 defence against ageing skin and skin cancer.
Put away those matte lipsticks and reach for a coral lippie! Spring is the time of new awakenings and rejuvenation so don’t hesitate to be inspired and try different colours.
Adding a soft cheerful pastel shade to your lids is not only fun, but will also make them pop. Adding a bright bold colour to your inner and under waterline will tie the look together. If a bright purple in your waterline is not your thing, you can always reach for a nude toned eye pencil to give a bright eyed and awake look!
Feeling like winter took away your colour ? Add a soft bronzer + highlighter to your makeup routine to liven up your colour and give the illusion you just came back from the islands!
Blush is magic! It’s an instant “pick me up” and if applied properly can easily transform your look. During the winter months the plums, golds and nudes were in high demand. This Spring, go after the pinks, purples and corals.
Wearing a lightweight concealer and foundation as a base will help enhance your natural beauty and won’t make you look overdone.
Applying a coat or two of black mascara always pulls the look together. If your feeling adventurous, teal and pink mascara(a light coat obviously) is a big hit this season.
Pampering your feet and nails is a luxury. Schedule a mani – pedi as soon as you can. Once the sun starts shining you’re going to want to wear sandals and open toe heels so it’s best to be prepared. If you can’t make it to an esthetician, read this article for a DIY mani – pedi at home! When choosing colour go for the pinks, reds and pastels.
When choosing a Springtime scent, ensure that it represents your personality. If you’re not a flower lover than don’t choose a citrus or fruity scent. If you don’t like attention than a bold scent such as musk or amber is most likely not for you! If you’re Vegan or a Naturalist, there are many companies that offer natural organic scents. Whatever scent you choose, ensure it represents your style and personality well. A lingering scent is at times how people remember you, so make it fabulous!
We can finally say goodbye to Winter hat hair, frizzy and unmanageable tresses! It’s time to pamper your hair. Your hair says a lot about you so ensuring it looks healthy and shiny should be a top priority this Spring.
At the start of every new season you should trim your ends. This will promote hair growth without breakage and thinning. If your fearless and ready for a change you may want to try a sexy pixi cut or a cute and very wearable LOB (longer bob).
Using a sulfate and paraben free shampoo and conditioner will help hydrate the hair and clean your scalp. A clean scalp ensures your hair can breath and in turn can grow easily.
An intensive repair mask should be your best friend this Spring.
A hair mask will help heal the damage from the cold Winter months. Once or twice a week is necessary to bring life and hydration back into your hair.
Styling your hair is always fun, but at times can damage your hair. Constant heat and tugging at the tresses weakens the follicles and over time destroys vital proteins needed for hair repair and growth.
This Spring go “Oh Natural” with your hair!If you have curly or wavy hair, shampoo your tresses, let it air dry and add a bit of volumizing mouse to your roots and ends. If you have naturally straight hair, towel dry the hair and comb out any frizz that may have developed from the towel.
If you must add heat to your hair, ensure you keep the hair dryer as far from your hair as possible to reduce damage. Coating your hair with heat styling products beforehand will minimize the damage.
Applying a shine spray to your hair will create a luminous shine and this will give the illusion that you have natural healthy hair. A good quality shine spray will also offer UV,thermal and environmental toxin protection.
If you decide to tackle any or all of these 3 essential steps, leave a comment below and let me know how it goes! I love hearing from you all!
