Worth the hype? Deciem, The Abnormal Beauty Company!

    Deciem Haul

    The Ordinary Haul

This post is long overdo I know! This so far has been one of my most requested post this year. I don’t blame you all for being so curious about Deciem! This cruelty free Toronto based brand is so popular among millennials that their “The Ordinary foundation” had a 25,000 person wait list! That is insane! Their packaging is no fuss, simple, clean and to the point.

Deciem “the abnormal beauty company”  as they lighthearttly call themselves introduced their current line of serums and foundation under The Ordinary umbrella to major success! This line introduced high coverage foundation for $7 and serums for under $15. How do they do this and do the products work? The founder Brandon Truaxe explained that because of the low number of ingredients in each product, it is possible to produce and sell affordable skincare to the masses.  Of course I was intrigued so I placed my order as quickly as possible. I waited 5 weeks for my products to be shipped because the company was out of stock…hello wait list ! Fair enough. I wanted to get my hands on these foundations that some were saying online could be considered life changing. Really..life changing? Well I had to see for  myself so bring it on Deciem!

I ordered the following from Deciem:

100% Plant -Derived Squalane  is a hydrator which is found naturally in the skin. You would use Squalane if you want to increase hydration or prevent depletion of hydration in your skin.  You can also use this product on your hair to prevent breakage and add shine.100% Plant Derived Squalene

    100% Plant Derived Squalane, $8

My thoughts:  I found that the Squalane did a great job ensuring my skin stayed hydrated. I was so surprised that the Squalane only had one ingredient listed .. Squalane!. That’s all there is to it. It doesn’t get more simple than that. I used it every day before I applied my moisturizer. I found the best way to apply this emollient is to place the dropper directly on your face, but not touching your face. Applying the product on your hand first,  I found, was wasteful because it has a runny consistently and is absorbed quickly into any surface it touches.  I only  have a bit left in the bottle so I placed an order for 2 more bottles.

Argireline Solution 10% is clear lightweight Serum with 10% Argireline Peptide Complex. Argireline benefits the areas on the face that are prone to folds (wrinkles!!) such as eyes and the forehead area. To use, apply a few drops on the forehead and around the eyes twice daily.

    Argireline Solution 10% photo

    Argireline Solution 10% $8

My thoughts: The solution feels like water on the face. It’s extremely lightweight and odourless. I was skeptical at first because I have never tired a serum that basically looked like water but I was assured that it wasn’t water. In one and half months time I had used up the whole bottle as I used it religiously every morning ( before the Squalene in the morning ) and night.  I can’t say that I see a dramatic difference in the minor crows fee that I have around my eyes but I do feel it has diminished them slightly. I believe if I had another bottle of the Argireline Solution 10%I would have seem a greater difference but I didn’t plan ahead of time to order a bottle. I am now awaiting my 2nd and 3rd bottle to arrive! At $8 per bottle it’s so affordable to give it another chance.

High-Spreadability Fluid Primer  is from the Ordinary Colours line under Deciem and is made up of high flexibility silicones that help hydrate the skin and give an overall dewy look. Used as a makeup primer it ensures long lasting makeup wear and Ordinary Colours claims that this primer helps spread your makeup evenly to avoid blotchiness.

Ordinary Colours High Spreadability Fluid Primer photo

    High-Spreadability Fluid Primer, $8

My thoughts: My first reaction was ” holy heck this is good”! It took me a few days to understand why I loved this primer so much. It’s almost identical to this staple  primer that I use on myself and my clients for $36 less!  You better believe I ordered another 2nd , 3rd and 4th bottle.  It’s perfect on the skin. It does exactly what it claims to do. It smooths your face and ensures your makeup lasts through out the day. As for the claim that it helps disperse complexion makeup evenly, I can see some truth to this definitely as it’s a very light weight formula that smooths out the texture of your skin allowing the makeup to glide on smoothly without the need to tug or pull to get the desired effect. The only negative feedback I have on this primer is not about the product itself but the drop dispenser packaging. I wish at some point Deciem will decide to package it in a squeeze tube instead of a dropper. It’s not easy to dispense. Overall this product is definitely worth $8 ! I can’t stop raving about how much I love it.

The Ordinary Lightweight Serum Foundation photo

The Ordinary Lightweight Serum Foundation, $7

The Ordinary Lightweight Serum Foundation  shut the internet down!

This $7 bottle had a 25,000 person waitlist as well as orders for 250,000 units it’s first week of launching and literally crashed the Deciem servers! It offers lightweight coverage but buildable to sheer-medium coverage and is formulated in a way that allows the pigments to look natural on the skin, serum like, and this does not settle in fine lines. It has a matte finish and works extremely well over any primer offered by The Ordinary. Only in Europe is this foundation available with SPF. This foundation and all Deciem products actually, are free of parabens, sulfates, mineral oil, animal oils, coal tar dyes, (WTF?) and a bunch of stuff I’m too lazy to type out…but honestly just trust me when I say your face will thank you for omitting junk from your makeup! The Ordinary Colours offers this foundation in 21 shades divided into 3 categories. I strongly recommend you visit their shade guide for a comprehensive breakdown of shades as well as swatches.

My thoughts: Every woman should have this serum foundation in her makeup bag for the days/nights she wants to feel good and natural in her own skin ! They are 100% right to claim this looks serum like on the skin. The foundation comes in a plastic bottle with a pump for easy application.

I apply The Ordinary Fluid Primer first and then I use about 1.5 pumps worth of serum foundation on a damp beauty blender to achieve the coverage I’m comfortable with. I ordered 2.1Y which I find is a good choice for the Summer months but once my tan fades I know I will have to go at least a shade lighter.

Every time I wear this foundation I am guaranteed over 7 hours of wear. It looks natural on the skin so if you have imperfections you want to hide, it would be a good idea to conceal those first before applying this foundation. If you are looking for a soft conceal of imperfections than you’re good to just use this foundation alone. For those that have oily skin you may need to touch up with some powder once through out the day but that’s probably after 6 hours of wear.

The Ordinary High Coverage Foundation photo

The Ordinary High Coverage Foundation, $7

The Ordinary High-Coverage Foundation offers a semi-matte finish with more pigmentation than the serum foundation therefore provides more coverage yet still does not feel or look cakey on the face.

My thoughts: I don’t wear this foundation as much as I do the Serum foundation only because I am, knock on wood, having really great skin these days so I don’t feel the need for that extra coverage. When I do wear it I love it. It still feels light on my skin but I know I have that extra coverage. I apply it the same way I do the serum foundation but I only use 1 pump for my entire face. This foundation is also buildable and hides imperfections well!

Overall thoughts: I’m really impressed with this company and how they managed to stay true to themselves while still offering great working products to their consumers! Deciem and The Ordinary line are definitely worth the hype. Their price point, products and overall social awareness is refreshing. I look forward to trying out a few other products from them and hopefully will love them just as much as I love these!

Have you tried any Deciem products? If so, leave me a comment below. I love hearing from you !

Get Glowing with Caryl Baker Visage Luminous Makeup!

NEW LUMINOUS MAKEUP - CBV photo

NEW LUMINOUS MAKEUP COLLECTION – CBV

I’m a huge fan of glowing luminous skin and Summer is the perfect time to show off a radiant glow. I’m so thrilled to introduce to you lovely ladies and gents the latest products from Caryl Baker Visage (CBV). I was beyond excited to receive these products in the mail. I literally tore open the box and almost took out my child at the same time. The excitement level was out of this world for 2 reasons : Firstly, who doesn’t like to get a surprise package in the mail and secondly seeing the CBV logo just made my heart melt as I’m a HUGE fan of their skincare and threading services so naturally I was overjoyed to receive their new Luminous Makeup Collection.

This is what was in the package:

    Radiant Glow Drops

Caryl Baker Radiant Glow DropsCaryl Baker Radiant Glow Drops

These glow drops come in 3 shades : Moon Child ( Cool Champagne), Natural Glow ( Warm Gold), and High Beam ( Opalescent pink). They are loaded with a botanical blend of Camomile Flower, Ginseng Root and Ginkgo Leaf Extract which are all great soothing skin ingredients. The drops can be worn alone or as a primer for a “no makeup” makeup look or you can add a tiny drop to your foundation to add luminosity to your skin. I personally love adding these drops to my foundation so I can control how much product or glow I want that day. I pump my foundation on the back of my clean hand, then add one or two pumps of Natural Glow (my favourite!) on top and with a flat tapered foundation brush I mix the concoction very well and apply it to my skin starting from the middle of the face and working outwards.  To use this product as a primer just follow the same steps but omit the foundation. I also love adding Natural Glow to my cheekbones and cupids bow simply because I like to feel extra sometimes! Who doesn’t right 🙂

     Mineral Duo Bronzer

Caryl Baker Visage Mineral Duo Bronzer photo

The duo bronzer is made of long wearing soft pressed mineral powder that contains natural Alumina and Mica to help reflect light. The bronzer also contains Rosemary Leaf Exracts to provide antioxidant protection and Sunflower seed oil to sooth dry skin. The universal shade is called Whipped Shimmering Bronze/Glistening Gold and can be used on any skin tone. I’ve been using it non stop since I received it. The bronzer is unique as it will truly suite any skin tone and offers a generous amount of colour to the skin. I always use a light hand when applying bronzer but to test this product out I was a bit heavy handed, but still the outcome was gorgeous. The product diffuses on the skin very well and feels light thanks to the mineral properties. After several hours of wear  it didn’t look muddy or patchy in areas.  Glistening gold has turned out to be the perfect shade for highlighting under the brow and cupids bow. It’s gorgeous!!

    Powder Highlighters

Caryl Baker Visage Powder Highlight photos Caryl Baker Visage Powder Highlight photos

Prosecco (White Gold) and Pearl (Pink Moonstone) are the two new highlighters being offered in the Luminous collection. Pearl is my favourite out of the two because it suits my olive skin tone very well. I wear this on top of the Duo bronzer to add a bit more glow to my skin. These highlighters are on the medium sheer side so over applying should not be a concern . I found they worked really well over the Glow drops as a primer. If applied correctly, these highlighters can really enhance your features and give you that high cheekbone effect!

    Nude Balms

Dew (Almost Nude), Blush (Succulent Berry), Petal (Baby Pink)

If you ever hear me ask for nudes….I’m referring to these babies! The Nude Balms are true balms which means they don’t offer intense colour like a lipstick , but will hydrate your lips and give them a nice glossy look with a reasonable amount of colour. My favourite is Dew and I carry it in my purse all day every day! My sister snatched up Blush from me *sigh* and I’ve started using Petal in my professional kit as I think it’s the perfect wedding pink to apply over lipstick for extra shine!

Canada Day Look wearing CBV Mineral DuoADIAN Lipstick photo

This is a look I created for Canada Day. I’m wearing the Mineral Duo Bronzer, Pearl Highlighter, Natural Glow drops and fiery red lips!

I’ve really enjoyed using the CBV Luminous Collection and I hope you give them a try as they’re currently having an online sale. Have fun shopping!

Have you used any of these products? If so, I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments 🙂

WORTH THE HYPE? The truth about the KKW X KYLIE collection…

    KKW BY KYLIE COSMETICS Photo

    KKW x KYLIE COSMETICS

The KKW x KYLIE collab was my first order placed with Kylie Cosmetics.

When I first saw the promotional photos for the liquid lipsticks I completely fell in love with them. I love neutral lips and I was instantly smitten by these shades so I , and most of the neutral loving ladies around the world, waited in anticipation for the April 25 release and tried our luck!  I was ecstatic that on my first attempt I actually made it through the queue and got my hands on these beauties.

After 2.5 weeks  of waiting, the package finally arrived and I tore it open as quickly as I possibly could. My first impression was that the packaging was just gorgeous. The blush / pastel pink collection box felt a bit velvety and sturdy which actually surprised me. The KKW logo was simple but made a statement on the package. A note of thanks accompanies every package from Mrs. West herself and hints at another event or launch coming soon!

The collection contains 4 neutral ( partially pinky) crème liquid lipsticks all named after Kim’s nicknames. Cute!

    KIMBERLY, KIM, KIKI, KIMMIE

    KKW x  KYLIE COSMETICS

Here’s the breakdown of each shade (left to right):

Image result for shade images kkw kylie

KIMBERLY : True nude and the most nude in the collection.

KIM: This is a peachy nude.

KIKI: This  is a pinky nude.

KIMMIE: This is a rosy nude.

I first applied Kimberly as I gravitated towards this shade first,  being the most nude out of the collection I knew I would get some good wear out of it. Off the bat it applied very streaky and I had to dip two to three times to get the desired effect I wanted on my lips. The shade itself is gorgeous but after 2 swipes each, bottom and lower lip, I felt the product was moving around too much, probably because I had too much product on my lips.  I detest this slippery feeling and that’s probably why I stick to matte lipstick, but without doubling the layer it looked like gloss and not lipstick.

Next up was Kim. I have olive skin tone and can wear peachy colours well. All the beauty magazines tell me peach is great for olive skin but unfortunately the KIM peachy nude was a no go! It was a ‘blah’ peach. Again, I  had to double dip to get a good amount of coverage and colour on my lips. Still after 2 coats it looked like gloss with no real colour saturation, even for a nude lipstick there has be some hint of colour.

On I went to try on KIKI.

    Pass…

I didn’t even try to double coat this shade. This colour did not suit me at all. Fair enough, not all shades will look good against my skin tone. I get it.

KIMMIE was next and I decided to switch things up a bit. I grabbed MAC Boldly Bare liner and filled in my lips before applying KIMMIE. I think a base is good when you’re applying sheer or liquid lipsticks. KIMMIE looked OK on me, definitely better than KIKI did. Again , I still had to double dip to get enough product on my lips and it still applied streaky and didn’t last long on my lips even with a base.

    Worth the Hype ?

Overall I would say I am not a fan of this new crème formula and I prefer a matte, semi-matte or Satin formula. These lipsticks are more of a gloss with a hint of colour rather than a lipstick. The product moves around too much and applies so streaky. This formula is non hydrating, even though I watched some very well known youtubers swear it was soo hydrating…*insert eye roll*. It isn’t a long lasting formula but with a base such as a lipliner you can get 1-2  hours wear. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind reapplying lipstick as long as it feels good on my lips but unfortunately because I had to double the product on the top and lower lip these did not feel good on and is quite wasteful. The shades, excluding, Kimberly, have a pink and peachy undertone rather than the brown undertone that I like to see in a nude shade. If you are a pink, rose or peachy nude lover than these may be good for you if you don’t mind the lackluster formula.

What did I like about the KKW x KYLIE collab?

The packaging is classic and pretty! The lipsticks aren’t sticky at all and felt lightweight and also do not have a scent to them. They have a nice texture as long as you don’t overload your lips with product as the product will become slippery on your lips and move around .

I’m actually super disappointed in my purchase you guys! I was looking forward to having the most amazing experience with these lipsticks but sadly that’s not going to happen. I will use them as I paid a lot of money for them since the exchange rate to CDN funds was so bad at the time. In case you haven’t figured it out , I will not be repurchasing this collection again, but that’s not to say I won’t order any other KYLIE Cosmetics products. We will have to see what this savvy entrepreneur comes up with next !

Here are  a few budget friendly satin lipsticks that I’m definitely thinking of ordering next:

ECHO PARK , MAGIC WAND , DOPEY , FRICK N’ FRACK , TANSY

Have you tried the KKW x KYLIE collection? If so leave me a comment below! I love hearing from you guys 🙂

Disclaimer: I bought this product with my own money. I was not paid for my review and the opinions expressed are my own.

Is Natural Skin Care Worth The Hype ? Rocky Mountain Soap Co. Review

    ROCKY MOUNTAIN SOAP COMPANY

    ROCKY MOUNTAIN SOAP COMPANY

I love a good skincare regimen and for the most part I try to stick to what I know works well on my skin and doesn’t break me out.  My routine is fairly simple ( not) : cleanser, toner, serum , anti-aging eye product, mask, moisturizer and finally lip balm. I told you it was simple ! Unfortunately, I can’t stop or turn back time (the things I would do if I could though…lol) so I’ve been finding lately that my skin is changing slightly and a few of my go-to products have been irritating me a bit. Maybe it’s the change of season or it could be that as my skin is changing it’s also becoming sensitive . So I knew  it was time to change of the skin care regimen.

The Rocky Mountain Soap Co. came to my rescue! They sent me these products to sample and I couldn’t have been happier to receive them just as I was looking to switch up my skin care. Before being sent the products I didn’t know much about this company, only that it was sold at Rainbow Natural Foods in Ottawa. I dug deeper to learn that Rocky Mountain Soap Company only use Toxin Free products to create their vast lineup of All Natural products. As well the products are handmade in Alberta, Canada! I’ve never used 100% natural skincare products  so I thought why not, let’s give it a go.

I was sent the following products to sample:

    CALMING TONER

                   CALMING TONER

Lavender and Arnica are known skin soothing ingredients so once I started using this toner I knew my skin  instantly liked it! I didn’t have that dry feeling I had before applying the toner and since I only apply toner at night, I woke up the next morning to very hydrated but more specifically non-itchy skin. I definitely think the lavender did the trick! As well it helped a lot that this toner smelled like heaven and I woke up smelling like a flower!

    POMEGRANATE DAY CREAM

        POMEGRANATE DAY CREAM

Pomegranate is superfood for your skin, just don’t eat the jar even though it does smell good enough to nibble on! The moisturizer is very hydrating when used with the toner or alone. As with all the Rocky Mountain Soap Company products, the moisturizer is 100% natural and toxin-free.If I could bathe in this moisturizer I would!!! The only drawback I found was that it didn’t have any SPF , but then it wouldn’t be considered all natural. Still, I couldn’t justify leaving the house with out SPF so I layered an SPF product on top of this moisturizer.

    AFTER SUN BODY BUTTER

          AFTER SUN BODY BUTTER

Since there’s not a lot of sun in Ottawa lately, except for a day here and there, I haven’t used this product for it’s intended purpose which is to soothe skin after too much sun exposure. Since I didn’t have that problem I started using this product on my legs after shaving! I get crazy little red bumps  and since this body butter contains Aloe, beeswax, coconut and castor oil ,which are all known hydrating ingredients, I knew it would sooth my legs! Voila, it worked! Now instead of applying lotion, I’ve started to reach for the body butter stick! It hydrates and gives my legs a nice glow as well.

    RESTORATIVE FACE MASK

    RESTORATIVE FACE MASK

Who doesn’t love a good face mask! This mask contains Ginseng and Spirulina which a are known to soften skin and give your skin a healthy glow by infusing it with organic botanicals. The first time I used this mask, I was a bit taken back by the smell. It wasn’t bad but didn’t smell great. It did smell like vanilla and coconut with a green powdery consistency. Once you add water to the powder it creates a paste and you leave it on your skin for 10-15 minutes. Don’t add too much water ,  a tiny bit goes a long way. It was easy to remove after the time expired and my skin felt very nourished and hydrated. The package is only 40 grams so you can get 4 uses out of the one package.

So for the past 2 weeks and half I’ve been using these products and I’v truly enjoyed the 100% natural and non-toxic products that the Rocky Mountain Soap Co. sent me to sample. I am obsessing mostly over the toner, moisturizer and body butter as I feel they really worked well and quickly to sooth my irritated skin. Now I’m not saying I will go all natural with my skincare from now on, but I am making a continue effort to introduce more natural and toxin-free products in my life. I have to say it does feel good to know that I have absolutely no chemicals on my face! I would highly recommend these products to anyone who is against chemicals in their skin care routine and who is looking for a well rounded skin care line that can fight the aging process and still keep skin hydrated and plump. I will definitely continue to use the toner and moisturizer in my routine ( LOVE LOVE!) now that I know they are instantly soothing my skin!

Have you tried any of the Rocky Mountain Soap Co.products? If you have or are interested in trying any of them, leave me a comment below!

First Impressions: L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion

I first heard about the True Match Lumi Cushion from my favourite youtube guru, Jaclyn Hill. I don’t usually watch Youtube videos as I don’t have the time , however, on my downtime I enjoy watching her spunky videos. She talked about how much she loved the Lumi Cushion and how it’s actually replaced one of her high end foundations. Of course, I had to try it out for myself!

                                                                 L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion
The Lumi Cushion packaging is rose gold and super glamorous. You know how I love me some good packaging! I have it displayed on my glass vanity and it adds that pop of glam!

For a drugstore foundation I found the $20 price tag a bit steep for the .51 oz product, but I bought it anyway.Lumi Cushion comes in 8 shades. I had a hard time finding the perfect match for my skin tone. I ended up buying Perfect Beige which wasn’t my exact colour but was the closest to my skin tone.
The foundation comes with it’s own “puff” for easy application. I wasn’t too crazy about it at first sight but it’s probably the only tool that will work with this foundation. I tried to use my beauty blender but I felt it absorbed too much of the product. I used my real technique stippling brush but the application looked patchy. I reverted back to the “puff” as it made more sense.I used dabbing motions to apply the foundation. I don’t recommend you swipe the foundation onto your skin as you will see the strip of foundation along your face. The foundation is very buildable. I applied one coat of foundation and loved the dewy finish it gave. I could have stopped there but I decided to add another coat of foundation. Two coats of Lumi Cushion foundation and you are a glowing dewy goddess! I love it! I didn’t feel it left my skin shiny in a way that looked greasy. It added a nice glow to my skin. At first, I didn’t add any setting powder but after a half hour of wear I decided it was best to set the foundation. Even after applying the Laura Mercier setting powder I still noticed my skin had a glow to it. You don’t have to use any setting powder, but I decided it was best because I was going out in the freezing cold 🙂

My final thoughts on the True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation: I still find the $20 price tag a bit high for the .51 oz product. I’m not too thrilled that the best way to apply the foundation is using the “puff” it comes with for sanitary reasons( how do you wash it after a few uses?). The best way to apply the product is by using the “puff” as well as dabbing motions. I hope L’Oreal comes out with more shade ranges. With all that to say, I will be repurchasing the True Match Lumi Cushion foundation as I’ve been wearing it everyday since purchase and have received so many compliments on how luminous my skin looks. Even in the dead of winter, I was able to achieve a glowy complexion from a foundation! L’Oreal, thank you for such a great product 🙂
