There are so many foundations to choose from. How do YOU choose the perfect foundation? You know, that foundation that doesn’t settle into the fine lines or dries out your skin a few hours after applying it! Well for me, in my twenties ,it was easy. I wore anything I wanted to, if I wanted to. In my thirties I struggled a bit as I started to see my skin dry out more.Well hello 40’s! I seem to be holding steady at just the drying out of the skin. Still no deep wrinkles or saggy skin…thank god for them good genes!
When we beautiful woman hit our 3o’s our skin starts to lose collagen fast and all those years in the sun slowly start to creep up on us. That doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy time in the sun, it just means we need to be aware of the damage it may cause to our skin. I digress, this post is not about sun protection, it’s about finding the best foundation for anyone over 30! Even if your not in your 30’s this is still a very good read!
Here are my suggestions on what you need to look for in a really good foundation now that you’re no longer in your 20’s!
Choose a lightweight formula. You can still achieve good coverage with a lighter formula such as Georgio Armani Luminous Silk or L’Oreal True Match foundation. Both have buildable coverage, and won’t dehydrate your skin or sit in those fine lines.
Foundations that contain Hyaluronic acid instantly plump and hydrate your skin! Charlotte Tilbury “Magic Foundation” and Lancome “Skin Feels Good” are both loaded with good ingredients to give your skin extra moisture and that lifted effect.
Serum infused Foundations are so impressive. Their multitaskers as they are infused with face oils and powerful antioxidants to help fight away free radicals all while covering up your minor imperfections . My favourite serum infused foundation is the Estée Lauder “Double Wear Makeup”.
Seek out a foundation that contains more natural ,yet active, ingredients such as white tea and thyme extracts. Arbonne makes a beautiful foundation that literally melts onto your skin
My top foundations that I have on rotation ALL THE TIME are:
In this photo I’m wearing the Kat Von D ” True Portrait Foundation” and I just love how it looks on my skin and is definitly a new favourite of mine. Super hydrating, lightweight formula with a semi-matte finish that lasted all day on my skin! It applied as a liquid but then dried to a powder finish. I added some blush, highlighter, lipstick, eyeliner and I was good to go for the day! My skin has a new BFF!
Remember, age is just a number we see on our drivers licence and nothing more!
Don’t believe me ? Google JLo, Queen Rania and Ms. Janet Jackson! All woman that have aged with grace and style!
As you can see my obsession with Charlotte Tilbury ( and roses lol) continues well into Spring. I’ve accumulated quite a collection of CT makeup and I can’t decide what product I love most…the lipsticks, glosses or shadows .
Who am I kidding, I love them all.
Mid February I had the opportunity to try out the CT Magic foundation for the first time. Besides the fact that the Medium shade is a bit too dark for my skin tone, I was overall impressed with it. It applied nicely on the skin and gave me about a good 8-10 hours of wear.. Applying it for the first time I saw why CT calls it “Magic Foundation”, it hides blemishes and covers up redness on the skin surprisingly well !
Even though this is a full coverage foundation it didn’t feel like I was wearing a mask ,in fact it blended beautifully on my skin! I’ll have to wear the foundation more in the summer since it is a bit dark for me right now, I hope with a light tan it will fit me perfectly. If you are a fan of Estee Lauder double wear then you will LOVE this foundation. They are my top 2 but CT is just perfect for a natural Spring look!
Light Wonder Medium #7 has been my got-to day wear since mid February. Light Wonder is not a typical foundation, I would consider it to be a really good tinted moisturizer. It is buildable, and gives a natural coverage and makes your skin super hydrated so if you have oily skin, this may not be the foundation for you. If you have dry or normal skin , this will work wonders for you! Since the foundation contains Pseudo-ceramides, it illuminates the skin quite a bit to give you a nice all day lasting glow. I’ve become a bit obsessed with it and I just wish the bottle was a bit bigger ( 1.4 fl oz) as I have gone through it fairly quickly…oops!
After I use Light Wonder I like to powder my T-zone and cheeks a bit so I started using the CT Airbrush Flawless Finish in Medium shade. This sheer pressed powder not only looks like a million bucks it really feels like it on the skin. It’s buildable and leaves skin glowing without a shimmery look to it.
I apply this powder throughout the day and it never looks cakey. For even distribution of the fine powder you can use a brush or a sponge but my preference is a big fluffy brush. CT claims that it blurs out pores and fine lines, I think that is true to an extent but only when I use the Magic foundation underneath this powder. Still, one of the best powders I have used in a long time and highly recommend the invest.
The first product I fell in love with from the CT brand was their eyeshadows. They are long lasting, versatile (apply less or more and they still look good) and they come in so many glorious colour ranges. I love that each quad has an all over shade, a crease shade, a lid shade, and a “outer v” for the eyes. Any newbie can pick up a quad and use it, it really is simple. But what I love most is you can wear these colours day and night. For day wear, obviously, be light handed when applying and for night wear go all out…smoke that colour out baby!!!
If you have never heard of Rocky Mountain Soap Company (RMSC), where you been hiding love?
They have some of the best natural, organic skincare and body care products I have ever tried. My new favourites are the Beech Tree Bud eye cream and the Sugar Scrub.
The eye cream is 100 % natural, toxin and paraben free and can be used day and night to get rid of puffiness and regenerate the skin under the eyes. It’s very light in texture and has a faint fragrance to it.
The Sugar scrub is my new BFF in the shower! It’s 94% organic and 100% natural and Toxin free and smells of French Lavender! Basically heaven in a bottle! It’s the perfect exfoliant in preparation for sundress season!! The Wellness bath salts are great to use in the tub to relax your body after a long day!
After I exfoliate with the sugar scrub I spritz the vanilla coconut body oil. It’s 85% organic and 100% natural and toxin free. I am usually not a fan of body oils because I find they don’t seep into the skin quickly and I feel greasy. The RMSC body oil is the complete opposite. It not only smells great but it absorbs into your skin quickly and doesn’t leave a greasy residue.
Quick tip for you: If you feel like your catching a cold, you need to reach for the RMSC Wellness Balm – Breath easy to relive cough and cold symptoms. Spritz a few drops onto your fingers and massage onto the temples and back of neck and other pulse areas to relive the symptoms. This liquid balm is loaded with eucalyptus and rosemary so you know they ain’t playing around!!!
I have a love affair with Pixi Beauty and the Rose Flash Balm is the newest addition to my pixie lineup! It can be used as a mask +moisturizer+primer. I have only used it as a primer + moisturizer. It ‘s a lightweight moisturizer and can be used underneath makeup. If after the cold months you are in dire need of a skin pick me up , grab this oil free balm and slather it on. Works great to brighten and revitalize the skin and it’s loaded with roses so you know it has to be good 🙂
The last 2 products are from Nip+Fab I have already discussed in this post here. but I wanted to include them as they have become a staple for me during the winter and I will be using them still this spring.!! They are really inexpensive and work so so well!
As we bid farewell to 2017 I wanted to leave you guys with some of my favourite #musthave products that :
#1 I used up completely and repurchased in 2017;
#2 I loved so much I tried not to use them up too quickly (failed miserably) and;
#3 they will most likely continue to be my #musthaves in 2018!
If you click on the product names below you will be redirected to the blog post that I dedicated to these products so you can gain an appreciation as to why I selected them as my 2017 #musthave products!
Yes, it’s been a long time since we last spoke my dear friends 🙂
I can’t begin to tell you how much I’ve missed blogging and interacting with you all!
Just a quick update on my life so far. As some of you noticed, I hope all of you noticed, my blog has been a bit dry lately. Trust me, it was not done intentionally…well it kind of was but it was for the best …trust me again. I was on an intensive course for 10 months that required 100% of my attention. Thankfully after loads of coffee, long sleepless nights , some tears and many missed family gatherings I can say I was successful and this opportunity has opened many doors for me. I’m so blessed and happy that it is now behind me and I can now concentrate, once again, on the things I love like family , makeup, blogging about makeup and eating good food…in that exact order 🙂
( I have to warn you, there is a lot of content in this blog post because I thought since I’ve been MIA I owed you a good read ! So go ahead grab a cup of coffee, tea, wine and get comfy because this one is worth the wait! )
So now we’re deep into October and just last week it started to feel like Autumn in Ottawa. I spent a whole day switching out my closet to warm, cozy sweaters, boots, and scarfs and of course I didn’t neglect my makeup and skincare stash!
Every new season I incorporate a few new items to my makeup and skincare routine and this season is no exception.
Let me introduce you to just a few of the new Caryl Baker Visage Nirvana fall collection. The whole collection has the deep rich pigmented fall colours that we all love like the coppers, golds, deep reds and burgundies. Perfect for Autumn !
I’ve used the CBV makeup in the past and loved it and this collection is perfection. So far I’ve used Faith, Shrine, and Stone eye shadows as well as Good Vibes lip lacquer. The shadows are pigmented ,long lasting with or without primer, but since I’m a creature of habit I always prime my lids regardless! I would have to say that Faith is my favourite shade. I use it as a base or worn alone for a romantic look. Stone has to be the deepest black I’ve tried. I compare the depth of black on Stone to the Inglot Cosmetics Gel liner pot, which in my opinion, is the blackest gel liner on the market so far. It’s that black! Shrine is gold perfection. It’s what I call a true gold. Not a yellow gold but more of a copper gold which I love!
The Good Vibes lip lacquer is the essential lip colour for fall. It’s a deep plum that dries on matte and hydrates the lips. You will probably get a good 5 hour wear before you may need to reapply. I paired Good Vibes with a basic smokey eye using Stone and Shrine on the lower lash and the look was fire! I’m really interested in trying the shade Lava which is a coral red lip lacquer. Two great colours for fall!
Next up is my favourite makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury’s uber successful Hollywood collection which includes contour / highlight wands as well as matte liquid lipsticks. Of course I gravitate towards the lip products because I’m such a lip product junkie. Showcased here are Hollywood lips in Pin Up Pink and Rising Star. Both shades are more on the neutral side which I adore in any season! The staying power on the Hollywood Lip glosses are ridiculous … in a good way! I also love that they contain beeswax to ensure your lips stay hydrated as many matte products dry out your lips. The lip wand is shaped in a crescent to mimic the natural curves of the lip for easier application. This is genius!
I also have the Hollywood Contour wand in a medium – dark shade. It is the perfect contour shade for my olive skin, however I’ve only used it once straightly from the tube and the other 5 or 6 times I’ve used the contour wand I had to dispense the product on the back of my hand and then onto a brush to apply. I feel like the wand dispenses too much product at once. Other than that I love this contour wand and it’s so compact that you can literally throw it in any bag and take it with you. If you are light-handed with this product it will last you a looong time!
Makeup forever is one of my go-to trusted makeup brands. My pro kit is 80% makeup forever so of course I had to try the new Artist Face powders. I’ve tried out Gold Copper and Shimmery Champagne. This product is so multipurpose. I’ve used both shades as a top coat for eye shadow to add extra “pop” to a look (kind of like glitter). You can also use them as highlighters and if I had the right shade I could have used them as a blusher !
This past Summer I started using the Dermologica Daily Superfoliant to get rid of the dead skin cells that build up over time and it worked really well so I ‘m going to continue to use it this Fall as well. The superfoliant is a powder and once you add water it becomes a paste that is gentle enough to use everyday and I truly use it everyday. My face feels so fresh and so clean after.
Another daily product that I now love and simply have to add to my skincare routine is the Vichy Pureté Thermal cleansing gel as well as the Vichy LIFTACTVE Vitamin C hydraulic acid for intense anti aging benefits. The cleansing gel is now in my top 5 must have products of all time. I knew it was a good cleanser once it passed my cotton round test.
What’s the cotton test you ask? Great question! I knew I had smart readers 🙂
The cotton test is when you take a cotton round and after washing with a cleanser and drying your face, you take a cotton round and swipe it on your forehead. If you have any dirt or impurities that come off on the cotton round than the cleanser is no bueno ( not good in Spanish) , however if you swipe and nothing comes off onto the cotton round then you have yourself a winning cleanser! This is my cotton round test! Go ahead , it’s yours to use. As well, I think it’s really important to mention that my skin did not dry out after using the cleansing, actually it felt really fresh and radiant.
The Vichy LIFTACTIVE Vitamin C is not going to be for everyone. Some of you may find it too strong for your skin, but my skin absolutely loves it! As soon as I apply the Vitamin C it seeps into my skin without any irritation. I wanted to add a Vitamin C product to my routine because I am so sick of my brown / sun spots that have formed these past 2 years. I’ve used the LIFTACTIVE Vitamin C for a few weeks now and it seems to be diminishing the brown spots. They are still there but it looks like they are less visible. For sure I’m gong to keep using the product until these darn brown spots are no more!! As well this product is great for lifting and plumbing your skin so you look more awake and youthful!!
Since I’m still loving the Rocky Mountain Soap Co. products I definitely wanted to include them in this post, but if you want an in-depth review of these products you can read all about them here. Same goes for the Ordinary products that have literally saved my skin this Summer. You can read about those products here.
That’s a wrap on my Autumn favourites! Again, Thank you guys for supporting my blog and I am so happy to be back sitting in front of my computer, with a bowl of vegan mint chocolate chip ice cream and blogging about what I love most! Thank you so much !
At any minute now Spring will pop up in Ottawa…any…minute…now… 🙁 The cold weather and snow still on the ground hasn’t stopped me from diving into my Spring makeup. There are few new things I’ve added and some are old favourites that I carry with me from season to season.
The new products I’ve added for this Spring are the :
Charlotte Tilbury Rebel palette and Kim K West Matte lipstick
Vichy Tient cream foundation
Pixi Glow Tonic
Anastaisia Pure Hollywood liquid lipstick
Pixi Rose Gold Blush Duo and DIOR lip scrub/tint.
I continue to use the CHANEL bronzer because IT IS THE BEST cream bronzer I have every used and I can’t live without it! It’s perfect for layering on top of fountain to add colour to your complexion.
The CHANEL lip gloss is a clear gloss and is always in my bag for those essential moments were my lips need a touch up!
For this look I used the green and gold toned Charlotte Tilbury Rebel Palette. I love a good easy smokey eye for daytime and this palette is perfect for the new season. I’m also wearing The Vichy Tient cream foundation in shade #45. The foundation is perfect as well as it’s not too heavy but has enough coverage to wear during the day. If you have dry skin, as I do, you will love the hydration this cream foundation will give your skin. It dries to a satin finish and lasts all day ( I have a full review on the Tient Ideal Makeup Range coming up!). I filled in my brows with the amazing Milani Easy Brow in dark brown and added the Pixi Rose Gold blush to the apples of my cheeks to give just enough colour for the day. I also applied Anastaisa Pure Hollywood liquid lipstick to finish off this look. The colour is just perfect for Spring( all the time actually!). It’s a gorgeous light peach with a bit of pink.
Spring Makeup Look
Anastasia Pure Hollywood is ” heaven”!
I love this soft smokey look for a brunch outing or just for running errands really!
What products will you you will wearing this Spring ?
* A few of these products were sent to me as PR sample, but as always the opinion expressed on this post are always my own
Every Spring I like to add some new makeup and skin products to my makeup bag and routine. This Spring is no exception as I’ve had my eye on a few very popular products. I’m dying to try them all! Tom Ford is definitely a brand I’m very interested in experimenting with. I hear from other bloggers that his lipsticks are like no other and are a must. The Farsali Gold Elixir is also another youtube and blogger favourite. There are other brands that produce a gold elixir but I really want to try this out the most. Charlotte Tilbury FilmStar bronzer is not only aesthetically beautiful but is the perfect contour / highlight combo for Spring. The Viseart palette is definitely a splurge and will most likely be my most expensive eyeshadow palette, but I have my heart set on it and you only live once. 🙂
I’ve been lusting over the Charlotte Tilbury makeup ever since I saw an advertisement for the “FilmStar Bronze and Glow” palette in a magazine! The Charlotte Tilbury brand exudes glamour and luxury. Gleaming rose gold lipstick tubes and gorgeous streamlined rosy palettes *swoon* ! Yes it was love at first sight, but how do the products add up? Are they worth investing in ? I was given the opportunity to experiment with a few products such as lipsticks, an eyeshadow palette and a multitasking “Beach Stick”. Here are my thoughts on the products.
