I’m sad to bid farewell to super hot lazy days around the pool with the kids. I always dread the colder weather but honestly, who doesn’t love watching the leaves change colours!
I also feel like FALL is a chance to renew yourself and sets the tone for comfort. When talking about comfort, obviously, I mean oversized scarves, sweaters, gorgeous booties and of course a coat that is not only stylish but so cozy!
Hope you enjoyed this quick read on my Fall essentials 🙂
I get to test out a lot of products but I don’t always love them all. When I find a product I love, I tend to overuse it until I find another I like more 🙂 I know I ‘m not the only one right?
The following products are what I’m loving ATM!
Vichy Minéral 89 Eyes $35
You all know I’m a huge fan of Minéral 89 Serum and once Vichy launched the eye equivalent I knew I had to get my hands on it ASAP! Minéral 89 Eyes is loaded with pure caffeine and hyaluornic acid to hydrate, brighten and reduces eye bags. I’m about 5 weeks into the my first bottle and I’m impressed. My eyes look brighter and more awake. There’s significant hydration in this area but I’m still struggling with eye bags, albeit they are not as pigmented as as usual. I’m hoping with continuous use of the Minéral 89 Eyes the pigmentation will reduce.
You can wear the eye serum alone or under makeup. Personally during the week I add some concealer but on weekends, it’s a bare face ( with sunscreen of course) and thanks to this gem, I feel confident and my little issues that I have with my eye area ( minor fine lines, dullness, flakiness) aren’t noticeable!
Make Up Forever Artist Nude Creme Liquid Lipsticks $25
Make Up Forever sent me these very wearable and long lasting Artist Nude Creme liquid lipsticks!
Exposed, on the left, is a medium warn coral beige and Bluff, on the right, is a light warm pinky brown shade.
They are A-mazing!
Artist Nude lipsticks come in 12 nude shades and have a satin finish. These are long lasting , non drying, non bleeding and so so creamy. I would definitely call these a hybrid of gloss + lipstick. They don’t have a sticky or tacky feel to them, and thanks to the small, precise applicator, they apply easily with no skipping on the lips. I’ve been wearing them all Summer! They compliment all skin tones and I will definitely be purchasing a few other shades to take me into the Fall season. I will have to repurchase Buff because I’m down to my last few swipes 🙂
Pixi Beauty DetoxifEYE $34
I have instagrammed my love for Pixi’s DetoxifEYE several times and continue to preach my *love* for them on the blog!
Honestly, they are my fave product from the entire Pixi line. Here’s why I love them so much. Each hydrogel patch is loaded with hyaluronic acid and caffeine to intensely hydrate, smooth and depuff your dark circles and eye bags. Did you notice I said , intensely? If I ‘ve had a sleepless night , which often I do, I apply these in the morning and I feel and look refreshed!
I have used many different eye patches to hydrate my delicate eye area and none of them ( which were more $$) worked to hydrate as much as DetoxifEYE did.
There are 30 pairs in a pack and comes with a spatula to help lift the delicate patches out of the container. I like to leave mine on for as long as I possibly can, around 30 minutes, but the suggested time is 10 min. I do house work with them on, surf the net and most often, I blog with them on just like I’m doing now. Yep that’s me, blogging and detoxifEYEing! They adhere to your skin quickly and feel very comfortable without irritating the eyes. I am on my 2nd package as I go through them very quickly. I absolutely cannot live without my detoxifEYE patches.
Essie ” Watermelon” Nail Polish $10
All Summer I’ve worn one nail polish colour and it’s this one here,” Watermelon” by Essie.
It’s a flirty, fun, colourful shade that can be worn with anything. It’s not a true red or pink, it’s a mix of both IMO! I’ve worn it to the office as well as to weddings. It’s super versatile and I’m basically obsessed! Come Fall , I will transition into something more neutral. I’m also in love with these shades from Essie :
“Pin Me Pink”
” Dress Call”
Sephora Face Mask Applicator $10.50
I feel this name is not really suited for the tool. I bought this little gem on the recommendation of a very talented Sephora makeup artist who uses it to gently exfoliate the skin.
I’ve become obsessed with exfoliating my face with this little tool. It’s super gentle and sometimes I only use it to massage my skin with water. It’s great for getting rid of dead skin in a very gently and relaxing method. I start with adding the exfoliator product, which is currently Dermalogica Superfoliant Powder Exfoliant to my palm and pick it up with the mask applicator tool. This is just preference, but I prefer to have the skin a bit moist/wet before applying any exfoliator. In circular motions starting at the top of the forehead, start to work the product , gently, onto the skin, always in circular motion never side to side or up and down. Then move on to the temples, cheeks, nose, chin and end with the neck area. Remember, your neck and décolletage need some TLC also!

Make Up For Ever holds a very special place in my heart!
When I started out in makeup artistry, Make Up For Ever ( MUFE) was the ONLY brand I used in my kit. I had 2-3 of the HD foundation to start, a few loos eyeshadows and 3-4 of their blushers. I also invested in 2 MUFE brushes and of course I was introduced to the HG of lip gloss, the Glossy Full lip gloss, which I’ve raved about before and to this day still use on myself and clients.
MUFE was kind enough to send me their latest innovative product, the Matte Velvet Skin foundation in shade Y405 Golden Honey and the 108 flat brush, which I already owned because I really am a huge fan of their brushes!
The Matte Velvet foundation comes in 40 shades, is full coverage and is meant to look and feel like your own skin. The launch of this product is huge!
Everyone, including myself, is so excited for the release of Matte Velvet. For me personally it means I get to add more great products from MUFE to my ever growing pro kit! Some brides prefer a matte -velvet finish on their big day and now I can truly deliver their wish.
As I mentioned above, the foundation is available in 40 shades ,Y205 Alabaster is the lightest and R560 Chocolate is the darkest. Due to the foundations unique formula the foundation adapts to the movements of your face and resists cracking and caking.
This is a photo of me wearing the MUFE Matte Velvet Skin foundation in shade Y405.
I love how the foundation matched my skin tone perfectly and how it evened out my skin with just one dollop of the product. It holds up to the medium to full coverage claim as it hid a few blemishes I had really well with just a dime sized dollop. *love*
I realized after I inserted this photo to the post that
#1 there is a glare and lots of sun coming in from the Gondola we were on going up the mountain at Tremblant so my face looks really “bright” but regardless of the extra light coming in, the coverage was flawless!
#2 I had to crop my gorgeous husbands face out fo the photo! He was not impressed with me when I told him he wouldn’t be featured in the post.
I am a bit tan here so Y405 fits me perfectly now, but come winter time I will need one shade lighter. I truly love this foundation because I am not a full matte, full coverage type gal. I prefer a semi-matte finish and this one delivers. It dries matte-velvet so it has a tiny bit of sheen to it.
If you like a dewy finish this foundation is probably not for you.
I would consider it long wearing as I applied it at 6:08 am and removed it at 11:38 pm and it looked great right till the end. It did seep into my smile lines a tiny bit towards the end of the day but we got rained on and sweated on all day so overall I would say it held up really well and exceeded by expectations.
I used the versatile 108 flat brush to apply the Matte Velvet Skin foundation but if you don’t have this brush, don’t worry, you can use any tool. I always use a MUFE brush to apply MUFE foundation. I guess I’m weird that way, but they work well together.
This is a large flat brush used to apply foundation quickly and I use it apply both liquid or cream foundation. I call it a versatile brush because it can be used to apply makeup to the shoulders and décolleté too.
The 108 flat brush is part of the MAKE UP FOR EVER Artisan Brushes collection. Each brush passes through 25 production stages and is checked 50 times for quality. I own 4 of the Artisan brushes and they are fantastic. The price is a bit steep but if you are willing to take care of your brushes and wash them regularly then the long term investment is worth it!
I think the saying goes – an artist is only as good as his tools 🙂
I hope you’ve enjoyed by blog post.
If you purchase the MUFE Matte Velvet Skin liquid foundation or Artisan Flat brush please let me know. I love hearing your comments!
I can’t believe we are saying goodbye to the blazing heat in Ottawa and shifting our thoughts to PSL, pumpkin pies and riding boots! Fall is on the horizon and I am not sure how I feel about that, however, since your an avid reader of my blog you probably already know how much I look forward to switching up my makeup and skincare products with each season. Fall 2018 is the season I amp up my skincare and become more adventurous with my makeup looks! Here are the Fall products I’m loving and living for!
Skincare for me is so essential. I have friends that don’t use any skincare and I’m shocked and ask myself :
#1 – how are we friends again? and
#2 – so you like aging rapidly?
Nope sorry. Not I.
I am a strong believer that skincare can and will help you slow down the aging process ( of course eating healthy, drinking loads of water , minimizing stress also help 🙂 ).
This is why I religiously wash, exfoliate, serum and moisturize every morning and night!
I was happy to receive the Rodial Dragons Blood Micellar cleansing water and Dragon’s Blood essence mist to help me NOT age rapidly 🙂. I’m a huge fan of this brand because they use innovative ingredients in their products that actually work great together to deliver results.
The cleansing water contains
Rose water to cleanse and refresh skin,
Vitamin b3 to helps brighten skin,
Hyalronic acid to lock in hydration while preventing moisture loss while helping plump up the skin.
This is now the first step in my morning and night routine, I dampen a cotton pad and wipe off my makeup. I like to use another cotton pad soaked in the cleansing water a second time to ensure everything is removed. I’m just paranoid like this! Give this a try if your looking
The Dragons blood essence mist is a triple threat. It can be used as
Truthfully, I use this mist as a setting spray only and I love it! I love how with one pump I get so much mist and it absorbs into my skin quickly and leaves it really refreshed, glow-y , and helps my makeup stay. On really hot days when I’ve worn makeup I’ve spray the essence mist on to freshen up my look. I love his spray. I didn’t know that it comes in a mini size, but now that I do know this I’ll be buying it in mini so I can carry it around in my makeup bag this Fall.
“Born This Way” medium to full coverage foundation from Too Faced is the fist product I’ve tried from this brand. I didn’t really know what to expect because all the reviews have been amazing for this foundation, but of course I needed to form my own opinion.
Day 1 wearing this foundation wasn’t the greatest experience. I felt it oxidized rather quickly and by the time I got home that day it didn’t look like I had any foundation on. My face looked rather dull. I instantly regretted buying it, but I said I would have another go at it as almost everyone I know has loved it from the get-go!
Day 2 was better. I realized on Day 2 that on Day 1 wasn’t wearing any of my usual skincare ( testing out some PR products) and the products did NOTHING for my skin and made my skin look really dull, dry and just plain gross! If your skin prep is off even using a foundation made with the tears of the last unicorn wouldn’t make your skin look good!
Day 3 I realized why I didn’t like the foundation as much as I thought I would. I wasn’t pumping enough foundation onto my brush. 2 pumps of the “Born This Way” foundation was not enough for my liking so I tried 3.5 pumps and VOILA, it was magic! Thank god this product is buildable. After trial and error I finally found the right ratio of pumps for my liking and I have to say I am IN LOVE with this foundation. It covered imperfections beautifully and gave me a semi – matte look. I just hope going into the colder months it holds up!
My skin in natural light wearing “Born This Way” Too Faced foundation.
Esqido is a brand that I was introduced to this year when they sent me their best selling lashes to experiment with. You can read my thoughts on the lashes here.
They recently sent me their new gel liners in brown and black . Esqido gel liners are no joke folks ! They are
have great colour payoff,
formulated without latex,sulphates and parabens.
The liners have a twist dispenser and a precision sharpener.
I’m a big fan of lining the inner eyelids and sometimes I find that some eyeliners don’t glide on smoothly in that area so I end up tugging a bit on the lid to ensure I get the liner in place, but with the Esqido liners there was no need to tug as the liner glided on effortlessly! The black liner is really a rich black and you can create a long lasting cat eye with minimum effort.
I used to be obsessed with the MAC lip liners. Soar was my absolute favourite as it matched all my lipsticks. I was never crazy about paying $22 for a lip liner but I did anyway because there wasn’t any other product I liked more until I started using the NYX Suede Matte Lip Liners! I FREAKING love them ! I’m sure I’ve blogged about them before but I wanted to reiterate in this post how amazing these $6 lip liners are.
Going into Fall, matte shades are a must for me so I picked up Dainty Daze ( shown below) and KYOTO. I like to line my lips first and then shade the top and lower lip with the liner, then apply the lipstick. I find it lasts longer and deepens the colour of the lipstick. For $6 you cannot go wrong with this amazing liner!
I don’t usually talk about hair care on the blog, but I really should as I get asked all the time what I use on my curly, and unruly hair!
If there is one product I can’t live without to tame my hair it would have to be the Kérastase Nutritive K Oléo-Relax serum ( some people call it an oil but I don’t like to call it that).I have been using this serum for years and years. It’s an amazing product that can be used on your hair wet or dry, curly or straight , frizz or no frizz. It can be used to add shine to your hair or use it for it’s original purpose which is to control frizz.
I have repurchased this product at least 4 times and lasts me about a year. I only use one or two pumps depending on the length of my hair at that time. When I wear my hair curly , I apply the serum to my wet hair before applying any styling products. When I wear my hair straight, I apply one pump before and after styling. This is my HG for taming my frizz! I know it carries a steep price ( $45 ) but it is well worth it for me as it lasts me a whole year!
I’ve discussed Pixi Beauty on my blog before , but I wanted to dedicate another post to them because #1 I love their products and #2 they are against animal testing, and I’m trying to make a conscious effort to feature more brands in this category! I have highlighted a few of their products that I’m currently using and loving in this post.
The Geltint & Silkgloss set were sent to me as a PR sample by Pixi ( #thankful). I threw one of them in my gym bag, the other in my work bag and the other is on my desk in my office, you know in case I want to freshen’ up at some time during one of my late night blogging sessions!
One side of the stick is the Tint and the other side is the Gloss. The tint is so subtle and adds a nice dose of color to your lips. , I found the tint somewhat hydrating but not too much. The gloss adds more hydration and compliments the tint. The gloss is not sticky and fragrance free. As both products deliver a light dose of colour to the lips, they are totally buildable and can be worn during the day or night if you prefer for a polished look.
Peel & polish is also another PR sample from Pixi. This enzyme peel can be used 2-3 times a week to help you reveal smoother more radiant looking skin. It will polish away all dry skin cells and impurities that have built up on your skin. The peel is made with natural fruit enzymes that help exfoliate the skin in a very gentle manner.
I think the one product most people are curious about when I bring up Pixi is the glow tonic. For those who haven’t tried it yet ( not sure what your waiting for), it’s a glycolic acid toner that exfoliates and purifies the skin for a more radiant complexion. I use it every other night before I apply my night moisturizer, but it’s safe to use everyday. Love this stuff!
Pixi collaborated with 4 amazing beauty and lifestyle influencers. First up is their collaboration with influencer Maryam Maquillage. She’s such a doll and I always admired her so when the two teamed up I was so excited to see what the collaboration would be. Of course it’s the very popular Glow & Bronze palette. The highlighters are very wearable and more on the natural side which I adore! It’s very versatile and used it everyday this past Summer to add a sun kissed glow to my face.
Pixi also has a collaboration with influencer Aspynovard. Together they created a set of highlighters and blush .I own Rome Rose blush. It’s the perfect peachy shimmery blush that I also wore the majority of the Summer. It really gives a natural flushed look to your skin. As much as I layered the blush I never felt it was overdone and blends beautifully on the skin.
The last product I own is from influencer Judy from ” It’s Judy Time”. Together these powerhouses came up with not one but two crazy popular palettes ; Get The Look : ITSEYETIME and ITSLIPTIME. One is an eye shadow palette and the other is a lip palette, obviously! I have not had the chance to try the lip palette yet but I have used the eye shadow palette many times! The palette has 12 shades, mostly neutral , some shimmery but the majority are matte. I love that they included a mix of shimmery and matte shades. It makes the palette so versatile and worth spending the dollar bills on !! Right? I can’t ever see myself buying a palette with just shimmery shades or matte shades. It has to give a wide range of possibilities so you can come up with various looks using only one palette. The ITSEYETIME definitely delivers in that department. The shadows themselves are smooth almost buttery and blend really well. My favourite shade is Honey Bear. I use it as a transition shade and sometimes I just wear it all over my lid for a more “laid back I but still got my stuff together look”
Here I used ITSEYETIME palette to create this look. I used Honey Bear and Bubbly to create a very wearable everyday look. It literally took me 2 minutes to apply the shadows. I saturated my brush with Honey Bear + Bubbly and one quick sweep over my eyelids was all it took. I decided to be a bit more dramatic, but still wearable , and swiped the colours on the bottom as well. I also used the Rome Rose blush to accentuate my cheekbones and cheeks. I freaking love this blush, pardon my language , but it’s so darn nice. It looks like I have a nice flush to my face with just the right amount of colour. Very wearable and low maintenance for this mom of 3!
One of my favourite stores for trendy, casual and work wardrobe pieces is definitely Zara! I know I’m not the only one who walks into the store and wants everything! It seems Zara continues to create pieces that land on every bloggers most wanted list and I’m no exception. I found a few…ok more than a few pieces that I need to incorporate into my fall wardrobe this season.
So it’ s no surprise that I’ve been lazy on the blog lately. Life has changed slightly for me. I’m back at school and adjusting to adult-student life. School during the week days and taking care of a family + side hustle is a bit stressful…Thank the good lord for chocolate and coffee! I seem to be fine after shoving handfuls of dark chocolate in my mouth 🙂
I’ve missed blogging oh so much though! It really is my favourite hobby and when I’m blogging I feel less stressed and a bit free if that makes any sense. It’s my little domain of creativity and I love it!
So back to it…
I did a little drugstore shopping last weekend to pick up 1 thing (baby shampoo) and I ended up walking out with MANY things and forgot the baby shampoo (typical Maha) !
I had never tried any of these products before, so here’s what I think about them.
L’Oreal Paris “Caress Wet” Shine Lip Stain in Iinfinite Fuchsia
Infinite Fuchsia looks very bold in the applicator but ones applied it’s a very subtle colour! This product has a small applicator that is contoured for easy application on the lips. This is very handy and I wish all the glosses, stains had the same applicator. The stain once applied to the lips is very pigmented and almost feels silk-like on the lips. It doesn’t give you a “Wet” look even though this is the marketing angle for this product. It lasted about 3-4 hours on my lips before I had to reapply which I think is pretty good for a non-matte stain. For $6, it was a good purchase and I would buy it again but maybe in a more neutral colour.
L’Oreal Paris Extraordinaire in Plum Adagio
This is a hybrid of lipstick + stain + balm! At least for me that’s what it felt like. I loved wearing “Extraordinaire” and I’m so surprised I hadn’t picked it up sooner. I chose Plum Adagio to wear this season and it really is a beautiful rich fall colour. It’s very reminiscent of MAC Hang up, which I lurvvv!! “Extraordinaire” also comes with an amazing short applicator for ease of use. The product is thick once applied so you don’t need a lot of product to achieve a good colour or pigmentation. This formula, I found, was much glossier than “Caress Wet”. “Extraordinaire” will also hydrate your lips tremendously and last around 4-5 hours before you have to reapply. The colour looks very rich and plump on the lips.A great product all around! I will be investing in other shades soon.
This product is from a company called Know Cosmetics and I heard about it on a few beauty blogs that I read so during my drugstore shopping frenzy I picked up! It’s a colourless lip liner that is used to prevent lipsticks, lip stains and gloss from bleeding and feathering! I used it only once and it worked well! I was wearing brown script and it didn’t bleed or feather out. This product did exactly what is was supposed to do. The true test will be when I wear a bold red lip come x-mas time. Then and only then I’ll be able to see if it truly is as fantastic as the reviews online say it is! Will keep you updated on this product, but so far it works well.
Last week was my first time using the Fit Me concealer from Maybelline. I think I’m the last beauty blogger on earth to try out this concealer. I had been using L’Oreal true match as well as Nars Creamy concealer before that. Both are great concealers but I wanted to try something different. I found the Fit Me concealer to be just as creamy as Nars but not as great at hiding my dark circles completely I was a bit disappointed because I had high hopes for this one but then quickly remembered that I know how to colour correct for under eye darkness! Duh ! This is where my next drugstore item came in handy, but first I’ll finish off with this concealer. I found it to be a good product to conceal average dark circles from a few restless nights sleep, however, I don’t consider it to be a heavy duty concealer(on it’s own!). A negative point about this concealer is that I had only used it 3 times and already ran out of the product. To me this indicates 2 things: 1) there isn’t enough product in the tube(.25 oz) and 2) I used way to much product to conceal my dark circles so it probably wasn’t the best concealer for me.
It’s no surprise that I love NYX cosmetics and in Canada you can buy this brand at the local drugstore. I picked up the NYX Dark Circle concealer as it had a salmon /peach tint to it and I instantly knew it would be great to use as a corrector. This product is actually a concealer and not a true corrector, but products can be manipulated and used in other ways. So I use this concealer to first colour correct my under eyes and then I apply the Maybelline Fit me concealer. BAM! Match made in heaven 🙂 You can also use any other concealer you like, but I was testing out the Fit Me concealer for this post. The NYX concealer is very very creamy and almost melts onto your skin as you apply it. I have never used this concealer on it’s own as a true concealer so I don’t know how well it covers. If you decide to use this concealer as a corrector, only apply it to the areas under your eyes that need the colour correcting.
Side Note: Confused about colour correcting ? I have a post coming up that will explain it all!
I picked up this lipstick in the clearance bin and that should have been a clear indication on the quality of this product. I was not impressed with this lipstick at all! The colour should be close to a true brown and it was not at all. It didn’t glide on like a lipstick, more like a dollar store gloss. The colour didn’t last more than an hour and I felt it looked muddy on my lips. All that to say, I was not happy with this product at all. As I was typing out this post I was searching on the NYX site for a link to add and I noticed that they changed the packaging of this product and now it’s called Turnt UP! Lipstick and not High Voltage. I’m not sure if this means they also changed the formula, regardless, it’s not good! I would not buy it again.
L’Oréal refers to this foundation as a liquid powder. Hmm…. it’s clearly a liquid so I was intrigued and added it to my cart. I applied this foundation with a wet beauty blender and then I realized why it’s called liquid powder. It really does feel and look like a powder once applied on the skin. I instantly fell in love with this hybrid foundation and have worn it to school everyday! It’s supposed to mimic a no makeup look which is does effortlessly. This is a true lightweight foundation that gives the skin a natural satin finish (so not matte and not dewy). It won’t cover redness or imperfections very well as it is a very light. It lasts about 7 hours before it starts to separate slightly. If you are seeking out a natural inexpensive foundation, I would highly recommend you try this product out. This isn’t a new product to the L’Oréal line up but it was knew to my makeup bag 🙂
essence gel eyeliner
I’ve used many essence products, some I’ve loved and some I would never buy again. The gel eyeliner is definitely a product I would buy again. It reminds me of Maybelline gel eyeliner but $5 cheaper. It almost can be compared to MAC fluid line if it dried a bit darker. The essence gel liner is very smooth/creamy and can easily be picked up by a MAC 208 brush , which is what I use to create a winged liner. The cost and the longevity of the liner is great. You may feel you have to go over the wing a second time just to deepen the colour but other than that it’s a real winner!
I’d love to know what new drugstore products you’ve tried and recommend?
