What a great way to start the new year! I woke up with inflamed skin and a bit of redness. This usually happens to me when I’ve over indulged in sweet & savory treats and dryness in our home, since it’s a wee bit cold outside, we turn up the furnace to warm up the house.
So how do we combat redness and irritated, inflamed skin? With natural ingredients of course 🙂
You can use a natural concoction such as an oatmeal paste made of 1 Tbsp oatmeal + tsp milk and leave it on my skin for 20 min. Oatmeal has amazing skin benefits and has been proven to be a natural skin cleanser, exfoliator and hydrating agent. Oatmeal contains polysaccharides, which are long chain of sugar molecules , a.k.a complex carbs, so when ingested equipe your body with energy . However, when used topically they help with the natural hydration process of the skin. One particular study that proves the benefits of polysaccharides on the skin is this one here published in Brazilian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
If your skin is itchy and irritated a cooling agent such as Aloe Vera is fantastic! I use Aloe Vera masks one a week even if my skin isn’t feeling itchy because it has cooling and healing properties that we can all benefit from. It just feel good on the skin OK 🙂 You can also buy an Aloe Vera succulent plant and harvest the gel directly. Here’s a fantastic step by step on how to harvest Aloe Vera gel directly from the plant.
Have you ever bathed in milk? Milk baths have become extremely popular as a way to calm and soothe itchy, dry skin. Milk baths can feel so luxurious, especially if you add a few drops of your favourite essential oil in the mix. Soaking in milk actually has many skin benefits. Milk contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid that can help loosen the bonds that hold old, dead cells to the surface of the skin. Also contains fats and proteins so actually works to help boost your skin moisture. I take milk baths more in the winter and my absolute favourite product to use is the HERBIVORE Coconut Milk bath Soak. No one said it had to be animal milk. Plant based milk such as coconut, soy and almond milk have calming properties as well. If you choose to use animal milk, Crabtree & Evelyn make a fantastic product made with powdered goats milk. If you choose to make your own milk bath at home, any full fat powdered milk such as cow or coconut will dissolve well under hot water.
Another way you can benefit from milks great healing properties is to use products such as Pixi Beauty Hydrating Milky collection. It was created to re-balance and replenish hydration back into your skin.It contains coconut, oat extracts, jojoba milk and green tea extract. I have been using these products for awhile now, and they work so well to calm my skin and reduce redness. The Hydrating Milky Mist, not shown in the photo below, is my absolute favorite for when I need quick relief from itchy skin. It sinks right into my skin and gives me that cooling effect.
Let me know in the comments if you have used any of these natural remedies or if you’re a fan of Pixi Beauty’s Milky line.
I have to admit I was pretty excited to see L’Oréal Paris new Fine Flowers Collection on the shelf at my local drugstore. This collection has been out for about a year now but I have never seen it stocked so of course, out of curiosity, I purchased the 3 products in the collection because #1 I needed to test these out for myself to see what all the hype was about AND #2 I’m a sucker for cute packaging! Into the cart they went 🙂
I purchased the L’Oréal Fine Flowers Cleansing Milk, Cleansing Wipes and Cleansing Gel.
This cleansing milk has extracts of Rose and Jasmine flower which are known for their calming properties. The texture of the cleansing milk is creamy and not runny as some people would think since it has the word “Milk” in the name. A pump or two is all you need to remove makeup, impurities and to achieve a good cleanse to your skin.
I apply it first thing in the morning to take off my night time skin care ( I could just use water but I like being a bit extra!) or at the end of the night to take off my makeup. A cleansing milk is always the first or second step in my skincare routine. If I had a lot of makeup on then I would definitely use a wipe or makeup remover first but honestly, lately I haven’t reached for any make up remover as my makeup has been B.A.S.I.C and I ‘m loving it!
I am a big fan of cleansing milk and have been a loyal fan of Nivea Daily Essentials cleansing milk for years now and never thought I would replace it , but I think I found it’s replacement. The L’Oréal fine flowers cleansing milk will leave your skin feeling smooth, clean and not drying.
The cleansing wipes also have a mix of Rose and Jasmine flower to sooth and clean the skin. Out of all 3 products in this collection, I would say the wipes are not my favourite and I will not repurchase them. I found them to be a bit thin compared to other wipes I have used and to get every last bit of makeup on my skin including shadow and foundation I had to use more than one wipe. I don’t’ know why but I also found the wipes themselves to be a bit small in size. The wipes have a slight fragrance thanks to the Rose and Jasmine flower extract and left my skin feeling smooth but that’s about it for these wipes. I didn’t feel they fully removed my makeup.
For $11 /25 wipes you’re still getting a great deal, however I did not feel it removed all my makeup and the cloth are too thin for my liking. I won’t be switching from my L’Oréal Ideal Clean makeup wipes to these.
This Cleansing Gel is a combo of gel and cream texture. It cleans like gel product and moisturizes like a cream product. Does that make sense? It’s a bit runny to dispense with caution as you may get more than what you actually need to use.
The cleanser has the Rose and Jasmine extracts and is soap, alcohol and “fragrance free” but there definitely is a slight hint of flower in the cleanser.
I used the cleanser gel after the cleansing milk a few times and honestly did not feel I needed the cleanser gel. The cleanser milk did such a good job, I decide to forgo the gel after a week.
If you prefer to use gel to take your makeup off and give yourself a clean faced fresh feeling , then this would be a good inexpensive product for you. I personally did not see the benefit since the Cleansing milk did the job for me so well. I have since given the cleanser gel away to a friend of mine as I did not want it to go to waste.
Overall I was a but underwhelmed by the L’Oreal Fine Flowers collection. Clearly the big winner for me is the cleansing milk. I was really disappointed with the cleansing wipes as I have used L’Oréal wipes in the past and have raved about how great they are to remove makeup in one shot, but sadly these were a no-go for me.
Have you tried any of the L’Oréal Fine Flowers products? If so please share your thoughts in the comments below !
I first started to hear some buzz about jade and quartz rolling while reading an article on one of my favourite blogs – Career Girl Daily London. The editor was raving about how the rose quartz facial roller helped her combat under eye puffiness and was heaven sent so we all need to have one in our drawers. Interesting I thought, but didn’t feel the need to jump on the bandwagon just yet.
What got me to wonder if I was missing out on a possibly great beauty practice was when Marianna Hewitt, one of two youtubers I watch regularly started raving about them, so of course I literally booted it out of the house to buy a rose quartz roller and just as the cold chilly air hit my face I realized, I’m crazy, I don’t have to do this. I drove my car right back into my parking spot, flung the door open to my toasty home and ordered one off of amazon like an adult! Next day shipping …CHECK!
What is a quartz roller?
A quartz roller is a handheld massaging tool which is made out of rose quartz stone heads used to reduce under-eye swelling, and help products absorb better into your skin. There are two stones on the tool, the smallest to be used around the delicate or smaller areas such as the eyes, chin and the bigger stone for forehead, jawline and cheek area.
Benefits of a quartz roller
The quartz roller is not new to the beauty world, actually the fabulous Chinese women have been using this nifty beauty tool since the 7th century to reduce fine lines, increase blood circulation and brighten complexion. They also used jade rollers that were believed to have healing properties. The quartz roller can also soften fine lines, and reduce puffiness and inflammation in the face as it stimulates the lymphatic system.
How do I use one?
It’s super simple to use. Click here for a 1 minute and 50 sec video I watched to help me master my rolling technique . This instructional video is definitely one of the best ones out there and super easy to follow. Trust me when I tell you that there is a technique and order to rolling but it’s also simple and relaxing to do.
I just want to emphasize that you should never use the quartz or jade roller dry on your skin. You can use your fave serum or moisturizer to help the roller gently glide along your skin. You never want to feel like your tugging at the skin with your roller.
So, I follow the exact method used in the video every night. I don’t have a lot of time in the morning to quartz roll, so I do it at night after cleansing. It’s been 1.5 months that I’ve been rolling ( lol) and I love it so much. I can definitely see less puffiness around my eyes and under my jaw /chin area mostly, thanks to the draining of the lymphatic system of course. My complexion is bright and I can feel my products working extra hard as they are being pushed deep into the skin.
If you want to kick it up a notch you can always put the roller in the freezer for a few minutes to really get a good pickle up in the morning! Overall, I’m in love with quartz rolling. I can see the benefits instantly and it gives me a chance to give my skin the extra TLC it so deserves.
If you’re interested in ordering the same quartz roller I have, click here. This is NOT an affiliated link so I will NOT receive a commission.
Please leave a comment if you’ve decided to incorporate quartz or jade rolling into your daily skin care regime! I love hearing your feedback!
I received such great feedback on my last post that I decided to write another one highlighting another product I believe is fundamental to achieving a flawless ( or darn close to one) complexion. I introduce to you , the world of serums.
What is a serum?
A Serum can be applied to your skin after cleansing but before moisturizing. Serums are made up of smaller molecules so a well formulated serum delivers loads of powerful active ingredients directly into your skin. They literally have one job and that’s to penetrate into the outer layer of your skin to deliver these active ingredients. I like to think of a serums like boosters for your skin. Yes, of course you can do without one and you’ll be fine, but after knowing the benefits of using a serum, why would you skip it? It literally elevates your skincare regime to supreme status!
Have you heard of Exfoliating toners or Acid Toners as they are sometimes referred to? If you’re not using one trust me, you’re missing out on the multitude of benefits.
First off, I wanted to write this post specifically on this topic as I was speaking to one of my girlfriends, whom I adore deeply, but would not allow me to use her name on my blog so we will use an alias and call her “Sheera” ( sorry, but you should have let me use your real name!)
I can’t believe we are saying goodbye to the blazing heat in Ottawa and shifting our thoughts to PSL, pumpkin pies and riding boots! Fall is on the horizon and I am not sure how I feel about that, however, since your an avid reader of my blog you probably already know how much I look forward to switching up my makeup and skincare products with each season. Fall 2018 is the season I amp up my skincare and become more adventurous with my makeup looks! Here are the Fall products I’m loving and living for!
Skincare for me is so essential. I have friends that don’t use any skincare and I’m shocked and ask myself :
#1 – how are we friends again? and
#2 – so you like aging rapidly?
Nope sorry. Not I.
I am a strong believer that skincare can and will help you slow down the aging process ( of course eating healthy, drinking loads of water , minimizing stress also help 🙂 ).
This is why I religiously wash, exfoliate, serum and moisturize every morning and night!
I was happy to receive the Rodial Dragons Blood Micellar cleansing water and Dragon’s Blood essence mist to help me NOT age rapidly 🙂. I’m a huge fan of this brand because they use innovative ingredients in their products that actually work great together to deliver results.
The cleansing water contains
Rose water to cleanse and refresh skin,
Vitamin b3 to helps brighten skin,
Hyalronic acid to lock in hydration while preventing moisture loss while helping plump up the skin.
This is now the first step in my morning and night routine, I dampen a cotton pad and wipe off my makeup. I like to use another cotton pad soaked in the cleansing water a second time to ensure everything is removed. I’m just paranoid like this! Give this a try if your looking
The Dragons blood essence mist is a triple threat. It can be used as
Truthfully, I use this mist as a setting spray only and I love it! I love how with one pump I get so much mist and it absorbs into my skin quickly and leaves it really refreshed, glow-y , and helps my makeup stay. On really hot days when I’ve worn makeup I’ve spray the essence mist on to freshen up my look. I love his spray. I didn’t know that it comes in a mini size, but now that I do know this I’ll be buying it in mini so I can carry it around in my makeup bag this Fall.
“Born This Way” medium to full coverage foundation from Too Faced is the fist product I’ve tried from this brand. I didn’t really know what to expect because all the reviews have been amazing for this foundation, but of course I needed to form my own opinion.
Day 1 wearing this foundation wasn’t the greatest experience. I felt it oxidized rather quickly and by the time I got home that day it didn’t look like I had any foundation on. My face looked rather dull. I instantly regretted buying it, but I said I would have another go at it as almost everyone I know has loved it from the get-go!
Day 2 was better. I realized on Day 2 that on Day 1 wasn’t wearing any of my usual skincare ( testing out some PR products) and the products did NOTHING for my skin and made my skin look really dull, dry and just plain gross! If your skin prep is off even using a foundation made with the tears of the last unicorn wouldn’t make your skin look good!
Day 3 I realized why I didn’t like the foundation as much as I thought I would. I wasn’t pumping enough foundation onto my brush. 2 pumps of the “Born This Way” foundation was not enough for my liking so I tried 3.5 pumps and VOILA, it was magic! Thank god this product is buildable. After trial and error I finally found the right ratio of pumps for my liking and I have to say I am IN LOVE with this foundation. It covered imperfections beautifully and gave me a semi – matte look. I just hope going into the colder months it holds up!

Esqido is a brand that I was introduced to this year when they sent me their best selling lashes to experiment with. You can read my thoughts on the lashes here.
They recently sent me their new gel liners in brown and black . Esqido gel liners are no joke folks ! They are
have great colour payoff,
formulated without latex,sulphates and parabens.
The liners have a twist dispenser and a precision sharpener.
I’m a big fan of lining the inner eyelids and sometimes I find that some eyeliners don’t glide on smoothly in that area so I end up tugging a bit on the lid to ensure I get the liner in place, but with the Esqido liners there was no need to tug as the liner glided on effortlessly! The black liner is really a rich black and you can create a long lasting cat eye with minimum effort.
I used to be obsessed with the MAC lip liners. Soar was my absolute favourite as it matched all my lipsticks. I was never crazy about paying $22 for a lip liner but I did anyway because there wasn’t any other product I liked more until I started using the NYX Suede Matte Lip Liners! I FREAKING love them ! I’m sure I’ve blogged about them before but I wanted to reiterate in this post how amazing these $6 lip liners are.
Going into Fall, matte shades are a must for me so I picked up Dainty Daze ( shown below) and KYOTO. I like to line my lips first and then shade the top and lower lip with the liner, then apply the lipstick. I find it lasts longer and deepens the colour of the lipstick. For $6 you cannot go wrong with this amazing liner!
I don’t usually talk about hair care on the blog, but I really should as I get asked all the time what I use on my curly, and unruly hair!
If there is one product I can’t live without to tame my hair it would have to be the Kérastase Nutritive K Oléo-Relax serum ( some people call it an oil but I don’t like to call it that).I have been using this serum for years and years. It’s an amazing product that can be used on your hair wet or dry, curly or straight , frizz or no frizz. It can be used to add shine to your hair or use it for it’s original purpose which is to control frizz.
I have repurchased this product at least 4 times and lasts me about a year. I only use one or two pumps depending on the length of my hair at that time. When I wear my hair curly , I apply the serum to my wet hair before applying any styling products. When I wear my hair straight, I apply one pump before and after styling. This is my HG for taming my frizz! I know it carries a steep price ( $45 ) but it is well worth it for me as it lasts me a whole year!
We all have had those days where we’ve missed a few hours of sleep or ate super fatty foods the night before and it shows on our face the next morning or during the day your face just looses it’s glow and starts to look tired and dull. It’s really nothing earth shattering but super annoying right? No one wants to look puffy or lack luster when it can be minimized or avoided completely.
Here are 6 tricks that can have an immense impact on help banish tired, dull skin days and blemishes.
Face Mist the day away
I always carry a face mist with me at all times. Throughout the day when I feel like my face is looking dull and I just need a refresher, I take it out of my bag and it saves the day.
Reapply tinted moisturizer
A MUA friend of mine gave me this little piece of advice , which he received from his MUA BFF who works on the set of a reality show ( he said it was a super covert operation so he couldn’t name the reality show…OMG), but he suggests to apply tinted moisturizer with SPF on top of your makeup throughout the day , if your skin needs a refresher without having to reapply foundation. You can easily use your fingers to rub the tinted moisturizer in to relieve you from any dry patches you may have.
Exfoliate the dead skin away
Gently Exfoliating every day or every other day will shed away all the dead skin and leave you with skin that reflects more light and looks healthier and brighter. Exfoliating is key to having better skin days.
Go super thick with your moisturizer
Choosing a super thick moisturizer will awaken your soul! Ok that’s a bit of a stretch but I love love a good super thick moisturizer to freshen up my complexion, especially if I’ve had a sleepless night. A thick moisturizer does take a bit more time to absorb into the skin, but, it’s well wroth the extra minute or two. Along with super long lasting hydration, some ultra thick moisturizer will give you added firmness to your skin.
Add glow boosting ingredients such as a concentrated Vitamin C product to your routine
By adding aVitamin C to your skin care routine you’re taking preventive measures to protect your skin from sun damage and giving your skin anti-aging benefits. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, so it naturally helps to strengthen your skin and repel things that could damage it. I find when I started giving my skin a daily boost of Vitamin C in the morning, I saw clearer skin and a more radiant complexion. Now be careful, not all topical Vitamin C products are created equally so do your research.
Sleep, Sleep and More Sleep!
Now I know you’ve heard this before, BUT, a good nights rest is super essential and contributes to healthy, radiant and blemish free skin. It’s not jibber jabber, it’s a fact!
According to Dr. Lily Talakoub:
“The reduction of sleep time affects the composition and integrity of the skin. Sleep deprivation increases glucocorticoid production. The elevation of cortisol inhibits fibroblast function and increases matrix metalloproteinases (collagenase, gelatinase). Matrix metalloproteinases accelerate collagen and elastin breakdown, which is essential to skin integrity, and hastens the aging process by increasing wrinkles, decreasing skin thickness, inhibiting growth factors, and decreasing skin elasticity.” *
