Where do you get your Vitamin C? Drunk Elephant vs OLE HENRIKSEN

    vitamin C serums

Awhile back I posted on IG that I started incorporating Vitamin C to my daily skin routine and I received questions on which product I recommend. Since I was a novice I wasn’t able to provide a fair response, but since then I’ve tried out the 2 most popular Vitamin C serums on the market and here are my thoughts and comparisons of the two products:

    DRUNK ELEPHANT C-FIRMA DAY SERUM

This Vitamin C serum contains 15 percent L-ascorbic acid which is a potent form of vitamin C for antioxidant protection, fading dark spots, brightening, and accelerating collagen production.

    • Also includes ferulic acid and vitamin E (tocopherol), which are great at treating sun damage and fine lines
    • Has an acidic pH of 3.3, which is ideal because L-ascorbic acid has been shown to penetrate best at pH levels less than 3.5.
    • It can oxidize within 3 months and oxidized Vitamin C can age your skin, according to dermatologists. Rate of oxidation differs from product to product so I can’t tell you exactly when it will ” expire” however 3 months is usually
    • Unfortunately, the rate of oxidation is not easy to gauge because it has a light golden tint even when fresh. Once it turns darker and more orange, it has probably oxidized, so I would discontinue use.
    • Contains Marula oil, which is a heavier oil with a thick consistency that may clog pores so maybe not best for acne prone skin.
    • Stays on the skin for up to 72 hours, even if you wash your face..that’s pretty cool!
    • Uses natural and synthetic ingredients
    • Fragrance Free
    • It’s expensive at $105 for 30ml bottle

Overall, I really liked the DE C Firma Vitamin C serum and would recommend to anyone who wants to firm, brighten and improve the overall look of your skin. It is expensive for a serum but definitely does deliver on it’s promise to give you a glowing complexion.

It has a good amount of antioxidants + ingredients. Contains high amounts of Vitamin C and absorbs right into the skin without that sticky feeling some serums leave behind.  You can easily layer other products such as The ordinary ” B ” Oil and/or Squalane Oil without having the feeling that you have too many products or irritation on your skin. I used up the whole bottle within 2 months and that was everyday morning use, one small pump for the entire face followed by B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum. I saw some changes in the nasolabial folds ( fine lines around the mouth) but the big change happened with the overall texture and plumpness of the skin, however, I believe that’s attributed to the use of B- Hydra + C Firma together. I call these my powerhouse couple!  I feel this product would work great on all skin types except for oily skin. The Marula oil is heavy and may clog your pores, so proceed with caution.  The texture of the serum feels silky but watery so work quickly when working it into your skin. If you want long term results from the DE C-Firma Vitamin C then consistency ( every day or other day) should be your goal!

OLE HENRIKSEN BANANA BRIGHT VITAMIN C SERUM

This serum contains 15% Vitamin C which is highest concentration of vitamin C for daily use.

    • 5% PHAs (Polyhydroxy Acids) A plumper alternative to AHAs that helps even skin tone and texture through chemical exfoliation, loosening the “glue” that binds the surface layer of skin together, and reveal the newer, fresher skin beneath.
    • Vegan, cruelty free
    • plump skin’s surface with hydration and reinforce skin’s moisture barrier.
    • Contains Hyaluronic Acid that helps plump skin’s surface with hydration and reinforce skin’s moisture barrier.
    • Vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps nourish and condition skin; also helps stabilize the vitamin C in the formula.
    • Again, 3 months is probably all you’re going to get form this product before it “expires”.
    • Contains Orange Peel oil – used to achieve the orange colour, may irritate some skin types.
    • Fairly priced compared to to other leading brands at $86 for 30 ml

Overall, I would say the Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Vitamin C serum will give you the best glow you have ever had. I do find that it takes longer to absorb than DE C Firma. This wasn’t a deal breaker for me but might be for some. The texture of this serum feels silky, smooth and isn’t a watery serum so you have time to work it into the skin.

    VITAMIN C SERUM

    Left – DRUNK ELEPHANT

    Right- OLE HENRIKSEN

The type of vitamin C serum you decide to use in you routine will depend on the results you want and your price point. I use both interchangeably as I feel they both benefited me greatly!

    A RADIANT GLOW WITHOUT LASERS!

    skinchemist. products

SOCIAL MEDIA: “Who wants a blushing glow from within ?”

    THE ENTIRE WORLD: ” Us”

    Is anyone surprised by this?

It seems as if our society has gone absolutely bonkers when it comes to achieving a healthy, natural glow and to be fair, why the heck not? No one wants dull, flakey, dried up skin, right?

Now,  the question that we need to ask ourselves is how do you achieve the “touched by the light of an Angle” type glow without lasers , surgeries and a hefty price tag?

Would you believe me if I said you can achieve a beautiful GLOW with quality skincare and a consistent routine in your own home?

    SkinChemists Advanced Brightening Collection lasers

Here’s the deal, my good friends at Skin Chemists intuitively knew that my skin was in dire need of a pick me up, so they did what all good friends would do. They sent help. Help came in the form of their new and  innovative Advanced Brightening Collection.

    The Collection consists of:

    Advanced Brightening Micellar Water

This cleanser gently removes make up, oil and dirt from the skin. It contains Vitamin B3 and Vitamin C which are potent ingredients used to brighten the skin. There are other potent ingredients present in the cleanser but the one that stands out the most for me is the Summer Damask Rose Water.

Rose water is made by steeping rose petals in water. After the petals are steeped, the water is filled with the roses’ natural oils. In ancient Egypt, rose water was used only by wealthy and influential woman, like Ms. Cleopatra, to achieve gorgeous glowing skin. Rose water maintains the skins natural moisture, regulates pH balance, tones and softens the epidermis.

Rose water can now be found as an active ingredient in loads of skin care products and is still used ALL over the Middle East and Egypt to hydrate the skin and maintain a youthful glow.

    Advanced Brightening Toner

The Advanced Brightening Toner balances, hydrates and minimizes redness.

The active ingredients are Vitamin B5 to hydrate the skin; Niacinamide to maintain skin elasticity; and Vitamin C to help increase the skin’s suppleness and protect from free radicals.

    Advanced Brightening Lotion

The Brightening Lotion contains Vitamin C to help increase the skin’s suppleness and Niacinamide. According to Skin Chemists, another active ingredient is Poreaway. “Poreaway is a new innovative active ingrdient, which visibly reduces the appearance of pores, fights shininess, blemishes and clogged pores, creates a smooth, matte finish, manages imperfections effectively for purified skin all day long and keeps skin clear and refined”.

So now we know that these products are formulated with potent , effective ingredients. Now what? Well, now you have to put the work in if you truly crave a healthy glow.

I’m going to tell you exactly how to use these products.

SkinChemists Advanced Brightening Collection lasersStep 1:

Soak a cotton pad with the Advanced Brightening Micellar Water and remove all makeup and dirt.

    Step 2:

Drop 1-2 dollops of the Advanced Brightening Toner onto a clean cotton pad. Gently smooth all over face. Let the product sink into your skin.

    Step 3:

Pump 1-2 pea sized amount of Advanced Brightening Lotion onto your fingers or cotton pad and smooth it all over your face.

    Step 4:

In the morning, use a serum that contains a mix of anti-aging ingredients and a moisturizer with SPF. At night, use products that contain a blend of AHA/BHA to lift away dead skin cells and a thick moisturizer to lock in the moisture.

    Step 5:

Repeat Steps 1-4 every morning and night.

I know at times we all get lazy and unfortunately it’s our skincare regime that suffers ,however, I strongly encourage you to stick to this routine if you want radiant skin. When the photos above were taken, I had already been using the full collection for 3 weeks. I definitely was feeling myself  and I felt confident in my skin 🙂 Clearly I’m wearing makeup but only a very little wash of tinted moisturizer and blush. Oh yeah, mascara…but that doesn’t count !

I am always 100% transparent with you all so I won’t tell you that these specific products will remove your wrinkles or fix any deep acne scars. The Advanced Brightening Collection was created to help you achieve radiant, hydrated, clear, subtle, glowing skin. It really is that simple!

I’m really happy with the Advanced Brightening Collection. With consistent use my skin feels hydrated, radiant and most of all I feel confident in my own skin.

WINTER SKIN SAVIOUR – L’Oréal Revitalift Derm Intensive 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid

    L'Oréal hyaluronic acid serum

I’m not sure what part of the world you’re reading this blog from but if you’re in North America than you would know what a drawn out, cold and dreary winter we recently experienced. When winters are this harsh, skin definitely needs a surge of healthy ingredients to bring it back to healthy! I know mine does !

I’m so excited to  introduce you to L’Oréal’s Revitalift Derm Intensives 1.5% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum, gosh that’s a long name! L’Oréal HA serum is new to the Revitalift product line up and it had such great reviews we had to test it out for ourselves  and obviously give our 2 cents 🙂

    hyaluronic acid L'Oreal serum

First, let me tell you why Hyaluronic Acid is important. HA occurs naturally in our system and keeps skin hydrated, smooth and plump. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever right?  Ageing and environmental factors contribute to the decrease of  HA levels and due to the loss of moisture you start to see the fine lines , dullness and uneven tone on your skin.  HA helps repair the skin’s barrier and attract water to the surface, which results in a plumping effect. It’s completely safe to use even though it’s an acid. It’s not the same acid as  lactic or glycolic which are used to exfoliate dead skin  and sometimes can cause irritation. HA is completely safe to use on the surface of your skin.

The fragrance free serum contains 1.5% of Hyaluronic Acid ( that’s a potent amount ) and can be used morning and night, alone or under makeup. The product absorbs quickly into the skin and leaves a slight tacky feeling on the skin, but once you apply moisturiser and/or foundation, depending on your skincare routine, you won’t be able to feel the tackiness.

    L'Oreal hyaluronic acid serum photo

All the claims, L’Oréal has made with this product are true! My skin instantly felt hydrated, plumped, and looked healthy and refreshed. You would never have noticed I had dry, dull, and lacklustre skin caused by harsh winds and frigid temperatures. After 2 weeks of consistent use, my skin looked and felt more supple, hydrated and had a very nice radiant glow. My smile lines were less noticeable because my skin had extra moisture in it due to a few drops of HA in the morning and night!

More moisture = less noticeable fine lines

The HA serum is 2nd in the Revitalift Triple Power LZR product line up after cleansing and before Vitamin C serum. I would have loved to test out the Vitamin C + HA serum together, however, I had no luck in purchasing the Vitamin C serum as it was sold out in every drugstore I visited. L’Oréal Paris must be on to something if their products are selling out.
    L'Oreal serum hyaloronic acid

With the great results I’m seeing daily, I’ll definitely continue to use the Hyaluronic serum in my routine and at $32 per 30ML bottle it really is affordable and sustainable!

Have you used any product from the REVITALIFT line? What are you thoughts on them?  Leave me a comment below as I love hearing from you!
